I am still waiting for your response as to how you would approach Uncle Fred, my coonhound with a history of severe physical abuse.

People are too concerned with WHY dogs do what they do. It is better to correct dogs for WHAT they do and leave the why to the so-called experts.
Yes, I do know "why" dogs do what they do. But to bite for "no reason" is NO JUSTIFIED REASON IN THE EYES OF THE MASTER. It is the master who decides on whether or not the dog should be biting or not. Do you understand this?

Nope I don't. My dogs aren't slaves.

Uncle Fred... I ahd an Uncle Fred once.
Anyways...first of all...when you cater to a dog because of its abused past you are actually doing more harm to the dog than good. Dogs live in the present. You were not the one who abused the dog, correct? So take the dog and start with a clean slate and forget about its past. When you forget about its past and treat it as such...the dog will forget very quickly as well. But if you keep catering to the dog because of its past...you will be tip-toeing through the tulips with the dog and the dog will remain in its past because of you...

So dogs live in the moment (I agree) but they forget the past. The how can you train them. When all the teaching happened in the past. Do you find you need to reteach things, as the dog forgets?

So you suggest I go ahead and smack him with a stave and yank on his choke collar regardless of his response? How long would you expect it to take before he stops being afraid of corrections? And what do I do about the fact that such corrections would inevitably lead to my dog being collapsed on the floor, correct him again?

and still waiting............ Are you fearful of revealing things. You have attacked me. Made judgments about me, all without answering any real questions about you.

A dog will cling to good memories and training from the past as it lives in the present. This is pleasant for the dog to do. But a dog will disregard its bad experiences from the past IF WE ALLOW IT TO DO SO. It remembers training because we allow it to do so. Dekka, you sure you want to truly discuss dogs with me? I do want to discuss them with you.

Listen..do not be an idiot. Until you understand the proper humane use of a stave, do not make such foolish statements regarding just to hit and yank the dog. Dog training is an art where corrections and PRAISE AND PETTING are in a perfect balance with each other. So......grow up with your answers.
Think.

Great I do... Will you please answer some questions on dog training then...
And if you really want to then there is no reason to attack me, or my dogs. I don't have any issues with training my dogs. They all do what I wish them to do. But as a trainer I am interested in others. But I too am very interested in the answer to Otch's questions.

No need to be insulting. I am just inquiring what you would do when the dog failed to obey the first time, you corrected it, and then it collapsed on the floor, quivering, but still not obeying. Now what?

As for you Dekka...
For security reasons of the clients that I provide K-9 security for, to reveal to a bunch of idiots my law enforcement background (which is very extensive) and for the security reasons of secrecy regarding the current police K-9 teams that I train, we cannot post such things here. Bad guys read too and my training for police dogs in narcotics work is kept under wraps so bad guys do not plan against it. And to reveal my exact experience would let the bad guys know some of my tactics as they were aware of me in the past. Now...that is the truth and the honest answer. Any other questions?

If a dog is quivering on the floor, use your common sense.
Dogs protest things in various ways in training. Some dogs get aggressive, some dogs simply ignore the handler, some dogs urinate, and some dogs fall on the floor in total fear. What you need to do is to be a firm and fair handler and IGNORE the dog's fears and train it normally. If you cater to its fears it will learn that it can get you to STOP its training when it shows it is afraid. Dogs are a lot tougher than any person on earth..it will be fine if YOU will allow it to be fine.
