Im posting this because I want to make sure Im doing everything correctly from the start. Does anyone here keep a saltwater tank? Im in the process of converting my 46g to a saltwater and I dont want to miss anything. Ive got a canister filter, double penguin biowheel filter and UV light sterilizer as my filtration. Im looking into getting a protein skimmer too. Im concerned about cycling the tank. Does it take longer than a freshwater tank of equal volume? Ill post some pics of my progress hopefully by tonight.

Get rid of the cannister and biowheel...

Get some powerheads, live rock and live sand.
The use of a canister and the biowheel creates nitrAte's in SW, which is bad.

SW doesn't take long to cycle with live rock and live sand.

It's JMO on the filters. but the point of those filters is to turn ammonia and nitrite to nitrAte. Where as live rock, live sand, and a protein skimmer will not create nitrates like that..

Good luck!!!

In my saltwater up now for a year I use a canister, internal filter, power head, skimmer, and a skilter (just for added filtration), live rock and live sand. I have had no issues with nitrates but I have heard of that happening before with the canisters, your decision.

When I first set up I used live rock, sand and the bottled sea water to just to get the bacteria going. I waited about a month to put any fish in there and have had no issues. Now my rocks are purple and pink just beautiful, when I get my camera back I will post pics. any questions just ask I am helping by friend set up her 125 right now!

We have a 30 gallon reef tank... well, actually, it's my fiancee's tank, but I've learned a ton about SW by listening to him... I would ditch the canister filter and biowheel and go with live rock and live sand. Also, you should look into getting a sump as well. A protein skimmer would also be a good idea.

It should take about 2 weeks to cycle your tank.

A good forum is reefcentral.com , or nano-reef.com ... there is a lot of information to be found on there.

What exactly is it about the canisters that makes them so harmful? I'm using crushed coral and of course will add live rock. I'm not buying a new filtration setup, I spend a good amount on the canister and hang-on emperor. And whats a sump?

Oh and one more thing-what exactly is the purpose of a protein skimmer and does it have to have a powersource such as a powerhead? So far I have the H.O.T Magnum Canister filter, double emperor biowheel, gamma ray u.v sterilizer and marineland powerhead.

Go on wetwebmedia.com and google skimmers on there it will tell you everything you need plus more. I use a canister have have NO problems I would NOT use any carbon in your filters as it takes out trace minerals and things a marine tank needs to succeed. I get all my info from a friend you as been running marine tanks for 25 years I completely trust the direction he turns me in. Do go on that site and see what they say ;0)
