Hi! I will be adopting a female GSD this sunday (if she fits well into our home)
I have owned a male GSD and he was awsome!
I was wondering what are some differances in males and females..

I have had GSD's for "years" :)) I've always had males which I found to be very easy trainers, biddable, 'go with the flow' types..The female I had, I loved to pieces, she was high energy, very very smart, not as velcro'y as my males but always had to know where I was..

Difference? i'm sure there is a difference, but it also depends on the individual dog .

I will definately have another female gsd one day and hope I am as lucky as I was with the first one.

Good luck with your adoption!

Well, I know its not exactly the same, but having two female GSD mixes, like jinx said, I've found that (hearing from other people that have male gsd's) that they are more likely to do their "own" thing..

but just because they arent underfoot 24/7 doesnt mean they dont know whats going on, they are always watching and keeping an eye out :)

I have one of each, and my male is definately much more happy go lucky. We joke that he is our 'special' dog....he is quite accident prone, and if something could happen to him, it will happen, poor guy. LOL!!
My female knows exactly what is going on everywhere, the location of every single squirrel and bird and rabbit and cat within a 10 mile radius, she hears and see all. LOL!!

For instance, when we're out for our walks, he's the one with his ears back, head down and just trucking along enjoying the fact that he's out walking, my female on the other hand has her head up, ears pricked and her eyes scanning and taking everything in. :D She's also the one that goes out and does what we jokingly refer to as her perimeter check before she pees and then comes back in.

Now, having said that, I wouldn't then say that every female is like her and every male like him. Each dog has their own distinct personality.

Good Luck!

Our female GSD and female foster GSD were very clingy. They stared constantly...they wanted to watch you...see you....be you...lol. But the foster was mentally unstable and not typical.

What I have heard, and it may or may not be true, is that male GSDs are more protective towards your "territory", yard, stuff, etc. whereas the female is more pack focused, i.e. more likely to be protective directly of her family members vs. the territory. That was definitely true of Anko, but I don't know if that was her being a female or just her individual personality.

I would say your so right! lol
Since I have had Rudi she will not leave my side. She stays right with me. If I move and inch shell get up and move and inch. My male GSD use to rule the roost (back yard). When I would go out there hed play for a few mins and go back to patrolling.

I had both a male and a female GSD before..
My female was more into protecting her turf and her yard/home, she was more into that kind of stuff, while my male was more into me and protecting me from her lol. He didn't accept her when I first brought her home. She would try to come near me or my Bull Terrier mix and he would run toward her showing his teeth. After about a month they got along really well. They were great dogs and I do plan on getting a male GSD again soon if I don't get another Dobe.
