I brought a laser pointer home the other day, and started to mess around with thor with it. He LOVED it. or hated it. Whatever you want to say, he sure did want to eat the dot. Does anyone else play with their dog with one? If so, do the dogs ever get tired of the game?

I tried to play that with Mojo, but he figured out WAAAAY too quickly that the light was coming from the thingie in my hand so he started to tried to get my hand instead. Now if i bring out the pointer he will immediately make the connection and start attacking my hand instead.

I have heard the cautionary warning that you shouldn't play too often (or let kids play with dogs using laser pointers) with a laser pointer, because it may trigger obsessive compulsive disorder in some breeds that may be more high strung. I wouldn't do it everyday... or for longer than 5 minutes at a time... just in case...

Then again... Mojo won't let me play with them... so we're all safe here! ;)

WOW!! I never heard that before. I would say that Thor is almost not strung as opposed to high strung, but I will take that into consideration. thanks

My cats used to love the laser pointer .. *L*

Be careful, though, because I have seen dogs that became obsessive/compulsive about lights overall with the use of a laser pointer. One dog was so bad that any sort of reflective light (through a crystal, headlights reflecting in at night, etc.) would set this dog into a spinning frenzy, trying to attack the lights. It even transferred over to fixation on ceiling fans. So if your dog starts getting a bit frenzied you will want to stop.

Personally I use a laser light to teach my dogs a "touch" command. I shine the light, they touch their nose to the red dot and they get rewarded for that. It later translates into being able to send them to a certain spot from a distance, or putting the red dot on an item I want them to retrieve, sending them to it and then giving them the retrieve command. So the laser pointer can be an effective tool in training too.

Vic and i use a regular flashlight. I have the kind you have to shake up and it lasts just exactly long enough. I never let him do the game for more then 5 -10 minutes at a time. Just enough to burn off some energy on rainy days. We have had no oc problems but i have read where others have so it is a judgement call.

Our old collie was transfixed with lights... She wouldn't go mad, she would stare for hours and occasinally lick at it. This was a few years back now..

Bodhi has seen one, and tried to get the dot. I don't have one, and no plans to buy one.

But MUCH more fun to play with the cats with one!!
