Takin the Hellions fishin tommorow night, to see how Verde does on the raft and just to get some fishing done.

Anyone ever feed whole fish to their dogs? These are small lake trout, less than 14".

I would never feed whole lake fish. I've cleaned a lot of fish in my life (never trout though) and found many old rusty hooks in them and lots of other strange objects in their stomachs.

Additionally, trout need to be frozen or cooked before feeding because they can carry a fluke that will make dogs sick.

These small trout are farmed and stocked this spring, very unlikely to have hooks. This is Alaska we dont have alot of the flukes and other such pests the lowwer 48 has.

mine have eaten whole, putrid, bloated fish *gag* before and were just fine for it later. I nearly had a heart attack and then they decided to roll in the remains and ... think "worst smell ever" and you've got the idea. If dogs can digest raw chicken bones, my guess is those little itty fish bones shouldn't be an issue. . . I'm not an expert though. Could you call your vet? I'd have to guess out there you're not the only one who has taken your dawgs fishing with you and fed the small catches to them.

I'd trim off the sharp fins, and probably freeze it for a couple days just in case there are any parasites or other beesties. I have some whole tilapia I got for our crew. Only Bruzer the pug likes it, so he gets them once in a while.

Trout are part of Lyric's special diet for his liver problem. But I cook them and filet them (such as my technique is...ugggg) and try to pick out the bones, just in case. Some are tiny though.

I agree , Gempress !!! Nothing's better that a grilled rainbow trout . Blue , I'm so leery of any small bones ( except sardines ! ) I guess I'd give a head ( ugh! ) . Small frys should be safe , but they should be tossed back !

There is that salmon disease in the NW. I cant remember the specifics, but it can cause death in dogs. I'm not sure if it applies to stocked trout, or Alaska though...
