hi, i got my first dog a couple of days ago and i was wondering....with all the talk about stuffing kong toys with peanut butter and cheese, do you really mean regular peanut butter and cheese or is a special type for dogs?

Regular stuff that you would eat yourself too. :)

With the peanut butter, make sure it doesn't contain sugar or corn syrup, no excessive amounts of salt, and if at all possible, no hydrogenated oils.

Also, don't stuff the entire Kong full of peanut butter. It's way too fatty and contains too many calories. You can mix your dog's regular food with a little bit of cream cheese or peanut butter and then stuff it in the Kong, or use pieces of fruit and/or veggies.

I stuff mine w/ Kong Stuffers, they are specifically made for dog kongs. Also, I think that it is human Peanut Butter (at least that is what I always used), and I know a lot of people freeze them.

I sometimes will put some kibble or broken up biscuits into a Kong and make a PB plug then freeze the whole thing. Takes the dog a while to get through the PB, then even longer to get the food out.

If you have a food processor you can make your own PB.

another question, it seems to me that the hole where treats are dispensed is very large, don't treats just fall out without work at all?

That really depends on the size of the treats. Little things like Charlee Bears would fall out pretty quickly. Milkbones (or preferred brand) broken in two would take work. it also depends on the size of Kong you have. The little baby puppy Kongs could hold in Charlee Bears pretty easy, and for the breed you have, is probably the recommended size.

^ I used to use peanut butter but it seems to give my guys really bad diarhea. If you do try the PB only use one tablespoon, and make sure you check his stool afterwards.

The frozen dog food sounds good, I'll have to give it a try. :)

Another thing you might want to try is freezing yogurt in there. Lots of people on here had suggested that to me and Kovi LOVES it.

Also, for a dog the size of a Boston, I get those little doggie bone biscuits and shove two of them in there back to back with the tops sticking out. I dont' bother with the kong stuff in the can, there are lots of other things that work just as well.

When you put peanut butter, yogurt or some other soft food inside, does it make a mess? I'd love to give my pooch a pb-filled Kong while he's pacing around the living room, but don't want it to get all over my rug.

With peanut butter, I've found that sometimes they don't get every single little drop, but that's okay with me since I clean the kongs out after they're chewed on anyways. I like to take a little peanut butter, some unsweetened apple sauce, and some cinnamon, mix it together, put it in the kongs, and then close it with yogurt, and freeze it. It takes them a while to get it all out, and it's healthy.

EDIT: Lol, just realized I've got one of my Kong Dogs in my siggie ;)

We designated an inside "chewing area" which just consists of an old sheet I throw down on top of a corner of the carpet in the living room.

It didn't take too long for the dog to realize it kept getting it's toy taken away unless she played with it on the sheet.

Yup, they learn fairly quickly to stay on their mat/blanket/towel/whatever you want to give them for working on their kongs or bones. :)

Mordy, so yogurt is ok for a dog? Like, I can fill it and freeze it and it's good for them? As I mentioned giving them peanut butter gives them the poops... and I'm not completely sure that it's good for them.
