We've been running under the impression that buddy's mites had come back. Well just the other day he started showing signs of a general bacterial infection as well, so we went in, just now, to the vets. While we were there we had them do skin scrapings to check for mites. They did a bunch of scrapings in several areas, and found no mites at all!

Phew! What a relief.

We're now running under the assumption that he's just got bad allergies.

So he got an antibiotic shot (he DID NOT like that) and a cortisone (sp?) shot which he took fine.

We've got some antibiotics to give him every day for the next week. the cortisone should last 3 or 4 weeks for the itching so he should be a pretty normal healthy dog for a while.

We're probably going to end up paying the 250-350 for an all inclusive blood-allergy test when he goes in for his vaccinations (about a month.) Because it *could* be something that we're giving him or (more likely) could be environmental...

Thought everybody would like to know.

I'm glad there are no mites! But I do hope they can do something about his allergies.

No bugs is always a good thing! Hopefully the allergies are treatable with OTC stuff...

Well, since his allergy gets SO flippin' bad we are going to do the testing to see what is causing these reactions in him and we will go from there.

It's a huge relief that he does not have mites, but our saga is not over.

Thank you for the well wishes! :)

Yay!! No mites is a REALLY good thing. I am so happy to hear that.

Allergies can be a big pain in the butt, but if you have the tests done then it can make things a lot easier for you guys and for Buddy. Yes, it's spendy at first, but if it can help keep him from a lifetime of antibiotics and corticosteroids then I think you would agree it's well worth it!

Did he get a Vetalog or Dexamethasone injection?

I wish you guys the best and give Buddy a hug. :)

You're using all these big medicine words, Showpug!

He recieved a cortisone shot and an antibiotic shot. I don't recall the name of the antibiotic at the moment. He also received antibiotics to take twice/day... name is escaping me at the moment, but I'll go grab the pill bottle!

lol, look at your receipt, it should say on it!

Cepha is great for skin infections I keep it on hand at all times as a "just in case."

It doesn't matter anyway. Just glad he got the treatment so he'll feel better! That's a good vet not to charge you. We used to charge $33 per injection:yikes:
They should have charged us.. I doubt it was a "we feel sorry for you" kinda thing... last time the injections were around $50.

I'm glad there are no mites. I can attest via my experience with cats that cortisone masks a multitude of problems and helps inflamations a lot so he will be feeling a lot better. It's good though, that you are opting for the test because figuring out what the allergy is using trial and error can take a long time and be a huge pain.

Yes, I'd rather just do the allergy testing and have him happy healthy a lot quicker than doing trial and error. It will cost a small fortune, but he's been through enough- he's worth every penny. :)
