My dog seems to have found a new favorite food, lamb hearts. I feed it to him raw (he is on raw meat diet) and he really loves it. I am wondering, is it ok to feed him lamb hearts a couple of times a week? I have heard that its not good to feed dogs to many organs.

thanks

Hearts are different than other typical organ meats like kidney and liver. Those organs are filters and the liver, particularly, stores a great many of the toxins that pass through the body.

The heart, on the other hand, is nothing more than a strong, specialized muscle. I wish I had good access to hearts for my dogs!

Most people consider Heart muscle meat. even though it is an organ, its just muscle. Feed it like you would any other meat and you will be fine. I haven't fed lamb hearts before, can't get them around here. Maybe cause i haven't asked for a while, i just use beef and pork hearts. Sounds like my dog may be getting a new treat, if I can find it.

ah thats good to know. Well what is better, Lamb Heart or Veal heart? The veal heart is bigger but cheaper so thats why I am curious.. figured cheaper cuz its worse or something..

Also what else can I feed my dog, I found lamb brains, chicken hearts, and lamb balls. Can I feed him these? The balls I want to feed him since it would for sure gross out my wife hehe

I see you're in Kuwait, so you may not have access to the same things I do, but here's a list of food regularly given to my dog

chicken: leg quarters, wings, backs and necks, half and whole chickens, gizzards, hearts.

Turkey, mostly just gizzards and hearts, and ground turkey

Beef: hearts, kidneys, liver, ground, rib bones, knuckle bones, marrow bones, tongue.

Venison, hearts, kidney, various cuts of meat, I also get other wild game from various hunters and family members that they're getting rid of,( moose, bear, elk, etc.

Pork: necks and hearts.

fish, mostly canned salmon and mackerel

cottage cheese, yogurt, fish oil vitamin E supplement, raw eggs (shell and all), i've never fed "balls", but that hurts just thinking about it.

I would think that either the lamb or the veal would be fine. Brains I would be afraid of with the cases of bovine spongiform encephalopathy springing up in various places around the globe (even though it is thought of as a cattle disease, there is always the possibility of mutations - as in humans contracting it).

We refer to bovine testes as "mountain oysters" in this part of the world :D

Heart is very high in iron and copper, so it should not be fed in excess. You can add it to the dog's diet in decent amounts, but I wouldn't recommend feeding it on a daily basis.

Since your pup is a Belgian, heart is awesome. Heart is high in fat, and the more fat for a young Belgian, the better! I often give Visa chicken hearts. :) You sure can feed lamb balls lol. :p
