I'm gonna cry, when I call Whisper, she runs away!! And she never listens to me! Or pays attention to me!! I don't know how to do it!! I know she is just a puppy.. But, oh my.. I am gonna cry, we have had her for a week now, and she is not listening to me!! How many people's puppies didn't listen to them at her age? Or at the age they got them? And I need serious training help.. I haven't really trained a puppy.. Only a full-grown dog, that isn't trained very well.. Oh my.. I know I come here for help a lot, but how else am I going to get help??

Do you have someone who can help you? You can play the Come Game with just using her name.

The come game requires two (or more) people. Everyone has treats. Because you are doing this to teach her her name, you will leave out the come command. One person calls the dog by name, she comes to them, she gets a treat and some loving. The next person calls her, treat/love, then on to the next. She will soon learn to associate the word Whisper to herself, and to something good.

Dogs don't come to us knowing their names. We have to teach them that the word we have chosen means them. The modification of the come game helps, or if you don't have help, what you can do is put her on leash to keep her close to you, say her name (a few times if necessary) and when she looks at you, treat her and love her up.

In further training, some people teach a "watch me" command. I don't like to use a separate command, I use their name. Saying a dog's name should get that dog to look at you - sort of makes the watch me command redundant.

Be patient, and don't be too hard on yourself. She's only a baby, and things will come, with time. The first 4 or 5 weeks in their new home is often the hardest. You have to get used to the baby, the baby has to get used to you. You'll be fine. Take a deep breath and go play with your puppy :)

Have you tried getting down on your hands and knees , tapping the floor and call " puppy, puppy, puppy " in an enthusiastic tone ? Once she starts coming , you can add "puppy Whisper " . Most good breeders do this before the pups go home . A yummy treat helps too !

she doesn't know

She doesn't know her name yet and has no idea that when you call her she is supposed to come to you! It will take work before she knows this!
Will she come if you have treats? If so that is a great start and you can begin working on this--calling and treating in all sorts of instances--outside, inside, while in another room ect. Start out small from a few feet away. Practice with you sitting on the floor, on the couch, standing, out of view ect and treat when she comes successfully to her name.

If she hasn't gotten to this part yet I would work with a long line. Honey is still in the learning phases too and I simply tie a string (she is very small though) to her harness and call her with a "Honey Come" if she does not come I give a slight tug to the string to get her attention and hopefully she then comes--if not I slowly reel her in. This worked really well for Wrigley and Honey seems to be catching on. Good luck!

you and your puppy have to bond first, maybe your puppy is timid and a bit afraid of you? first bond, your puppy should tag along behind you everywhere you go. When this is accomplished THEN start practicing the comes "Good Luck"

When do puppies normally respond to training? Just curious.. I don't remember Hershey's or I wouldn't have all these silly questions.

Puppy training should be all about play. You don't need to do formal training until your pup is older. Use treats and toys and games. Talk to her all the time! Use consistent vocabulary so she learns it. Only use her name for positive communication. Don't ever use her name with the word, "no" in the same sentence. And last, instead of telling her what not to do, like, "No bark!", teach her what she should do instead as in, "Be Quiet". Try to make a list of the things you want to teach your puppy and teach them in little lessons. It's difficult and a little confusing, but you'll get it. Hang in there!

Young pups learn by tone of voice . Hopefully they learned when at the breeders . No harsh tones unless there's danger ! Even a piddle inside should be treated with a quick pickup ( of course you're watching ! ) a "no-no ... squat outside ! " and praise when they finish .

Hi,

Only had my pup 2 weeks so no expert, initially he wouldnt respond. I figured that if I did something repetitive each time I wanted him to come to me he would quickly learn the link to what I wanted so I started tapping my leg.thigh and saying his name softly. After about 2 days it worked. Mind you I done this pretty much every hour i had himout in the garden now he seems topretty much respond purely on the sound of me tapping my thigh and comes running to me. I have been teaching my two daughters to do the same. I explained to them that if you were in the garden/park and someone was screaming your name to come to them and they looked more and more aggitated the last thing you would do would be to go towards them, I guess a puppy feels pretty much the same way. If you are more appealing and give them a good pat when they come to you they quickly learn to respond.

I would suggest you try to do something repetitive too, its a pain at first but I was shocked at how quick he picked it up and now taking him in the garden and getting him indoors is much less of a chore and less time spent chasing him round the garden (unless he is chewing on some grass or a stick that he doesnt want me to have, but thats a different story!)

Good luck

All good breeders have done puppy calling early on . Start from scratch on your hands and knees clapping hands with an enthusiastic " puppy, puppy puppy " with rewards and praise when he comes .
