Ruby...

You are a very, VERY naive person if you can sit there and tell me drug users "only hurt themselves". What a truly thoughtless comment to make.

I have no problem agreeing to disagree. None what so ever. Have a great day!:)

Actually, my ex-husband was a drug user. I know first-hand how much they can hurt other people. But he didn't keep me chained up, torture me every day of my life to make me aggressive, and then wash and drug me, stick me in a pit with another person just like me and bet on which one of us would die first. For kicks and a great night out.

So I'm very happy to agree to disagree. I think you'll find that there will be many who will be happy to disagree with you.

I never said that what he did wasn't bad. You are over reacting over someone saying "Hey-- he's a person too". You went on an all out rant on HbyH because of that statement. That is overreacting to me.

Sis, I totally agree, I'm pretty pissed at Vick myself for what he did, it is pretty worthless. He didn't even keep the money he won for himself, he gave it to his cronies. He was in it for fun. That REALLY pisses me off.

And HbyH, I ditto everything you said :)

That makes a huge difference in how my day/life runs. Make sure and update me with poll numbers, k? :lol-sign:
There's no need. I am secure in my knowledge, my age and experience, and my convictions. I don't need to resort to childish sarcasm and points-keeping when someone has an argument I don't have an answer to. :)

Angel - fair enough. I think we can both agree that Vick and his actions belong in the darkest depths of hell. I just have a REALLY hard time accepting that any intelligent person can actually think he's no worse than your average drug user.

It sounds to me as though you guys are both pretty young (just an observation).

I think that perhaps you don't really understand the full enormity of dogfighting? Of how bad it really is?

Here are some videos. I have to warn you, they're not nice. But I think they should be watched by anyone who is following this case, so they can grasp the true horror of this crime.

It's really, REALLY bad. The very worst of animal cruelty, and the very worst of human evil.

Honey, I'm far from young, and I have children. While I may not be as old as some of our members, I am not young either (I'm 20 by the way:))

Same for HbyH, I do believe.

I don't need to see your links. I am fully aware of dogfighting and the cruelty that is involved in it. I choose not to open that link...'cause it is truly heartbreaking for me, as I just put a dog to sleep Friday that I adored, because my father, the man that raised me, had abused him, hit him, and fed him only one pound of raw hamburger a week, all because he had pit bull in him and my father thought he'd be a grand fighting dog. He bit my child, and we deemed him dangerous, as he's bit people before.

Sorry for babbling, but I thought I'd give an explanation for why I will not watch your video.

Far from young? Goodness me - 20 is just a baby. And I mean that affectionately, not rudely. If only I was 20 again.

I'm really sorry to hear about your dog - that's so very sad. Another reason that dogfighting causes untold misery, not just for the dogs involved but for so many other dogs that suffer abuses just because they might have pit bull in them.

I only watched those videos today for the first time. They were posted on a cat site I am on as a voting contest for the video that most exposes the cruelty of dogfighting. It took me two weeks to muster up the courage to watch them. I've seen so many terrible pictures that will stay with me until the end of my days, I didn't think I'd be able to cope with the videos. One of the members there kindly told me exactly what was in them, so I knew what I was going to be watching.

They aren't as graphic as I thought, but one of them has sound which is truly horrifying. Really bad. And enough footage that I had to turn it off almost immediately. I don't want people to watch them to be hurt by them (although there is no way you couldn't be) but I have heard a surprising number of people say that they didn't think what he did was `all that bad' or that they didn't think he was such a bad guy - just `made a mistake' - that I honestly believe that they don't really understand what it's really like. The sheer cruelty of it staggers me.

That's why I was so hooked on both your comments that he wasn't any worse than a drug user. That really just blew me away. His crimes are amongst the worst you can commit. Just because dogs were the victims it didn't make his motivation and enjoyment of it any less evil. I wouldn't ever physically be able to ever support or defend anyone who committed such crimes - against people or animals. Especially for years on end with a full knowledge of how terrible it is.

I don't really support him, nor am I defending Vick. However I do understand that he is still a person, and even though what he did was wrong as all (believe me, dogfighting is right up there with raping and murder to me too), I don't think it is wrong for his fans to support him by wear the number 7 Atlanta Falcons jersey.

LOL! Don't I know it! I have about 25-30 hockey jerseys... a couple soccer and football ones... there's a small fortune in the "hockey closet"! :)
Of course the player gets injured.. that's the rule of buying a jersey!
Jules, I've got a few hockey jerseys that I don't even wear...EVER!

And then there's all the ones I have for use...sheesh...talk about money for jerseys....and after you buy one and have it lettered professionally, the guy gets traded...

LOL! I know exactly what you mean! I used to buy jerseys because I was sentimental... when I went on vacation to a place- I had to have the town's jersey. *sigh* I tried selling them... well, I piled them all up on the bed and then I couldn't decide :p Too many old beer stains, cuts, burns, and memories. *sigh*

Do you at least have a Caps jersey? ;)

A single one? Nope. I've got several. LOL! Home, Away, 3rd Jersey... I believe in being prepared! And of course the "old" jersey with all the autographs.

My favorite three jerseys are my Anaheim jersey from 5 years ago. (Always been a fan!) My Minnesota Wild Jersey and my Miro Satan jersey from Buffalo, *sigh* b/c he's with the Isles now.

I absolutely refuse to buy a Penguins, NYR or Flyers Jersey. If someone gave one to me I'd probably refuse it...or burn it in effigy! :lol-sign:

I guess what I don't get is this idea that because I care very deeply about what Vick did that I don't care deeply enough about other atrocities, committed to humans. I have enough caring and outrage to go around, really. I would be just as sickened if Vick had been accused of (and plead guilty to) beating his girlfriend, or rape, or dealing meth. Just because someone is upset by his dog fighting doesn't mean they wouldn't be upset if it had been something else.

I think the dog fighting got attention for a number of reasons that don't have anything to do with people caring more about dogs than people. It's not your average "star athelete behaving badly" story where they get drunk and take a swing at someone or get a DUI or throw a water bottle at a fan. It's something you don't hear about every day (unless you're really a dog advocacy person). It kind of took people by surprise. There were stories on NPR where basically they were interviewing people just to show listeners that dog fighting does in fact go on in this country and it actually goes on quite a bit. Not everyone is aware of that. And then there was the whole go-round with him denying it and then coming back out and pleading guilty. It got a lot of attention. Much more than if he'd just plead guilty immediately and not made such a fuss about his innocence.

There seems to be, though, this automatic assumption that if you, say, give to animal related charities that you don't give to human-related ones. Or that if you are upset by animal cruelty than you aren't by human cruelty. It's not a zero sum game. I personally don't have like, "60 units of caring" that I have to dole out carefully to various things and then all my caring is used up and I can't give out any more. I have a pretty much infinite amount and anytime another creature is willfully hurt by a human being, I care. Very much. I get sick to my stomach and it makes me angry. It doesn't matter if the creature being hurt is a human or another animal or a baby or an adult.
