I don't believe in showers...hence my being 'shower impaired' on giving one. Stef didn't have a wedding shower (because of my beliefs), but when a baby shower was mentioned, her eyes just looked so hopeful. OK...doing it. It will be Nov. 5th. has anyone ever gone to one...and played a game that didn't make you groan in agony?? if so...PALEEEEEESE tell me about it. also....little munchie ideas...dips?? I will have the token cake (gag) and a complete lunch, but mind is blank (yeah..what else is new, right?) on yummy munchies. prizes........what the heck do I get?? just some 'girlie kitchen stuff' or something??????? I was planning on having this at a restaurant closer to Stef's house..but that is wayyyy to difficult to coordinate living this far away..so folks are gonna have to trek to my house. it is basically just family, they are having a shower at work for her prior. (don't have to clean sooo much if it's JUST family) I'm not having luck looking on the net..some of that stuff sounds toooooo stupid, even for Martha Stewart. thanks for ANYthing!!!

A funny game at my shower was the diaper game.Bear with me it might sound gross at first.Go buy some newborn Diapers you will need 6 for the game.Buy 6 different kinds of chocolate bars ie caramilk,oh henry.Put a bit of the choclate bar into a diaper microwave it until it is warm and a little melted.Than play guess the kind of chocolate bar the guests can smell, taste or whatever to figure out which is which. The people who get it right get a prize. Its funny to see people actually wanting to smell a diaper lol.

We had one in June for my sister in law. I actually help her mom set it up. Figure out who is invited and set a date. Get the invitations in the mail. Also you need to know who is a yes and who is a no. That way you know exactly what to expect! We all sat around yaking and opening presents. Poor Annie wore a nice paper plate with a bow on it on her head. At my shower we just opened gifts and yaked! We are a talkative bunch.

For food we had cake, of course, sandwiches, cold cuts, cheese[but that is a must with the auger family], pickles, chips and dip, tea, coffee, pop[soda], cookies.....it was kind of like buffet style take what you want.

You can do the baby food game. Pass around jars of baby food with the labels either covered or removed. See who can get the most flavors correct.

Do the diaper game with the melted chocolate. We did that for my daughters babyshower, everyone loved it. My mom thought it was so funny she asked if she could take the diapers home with her to have my dad guess!

A simple game is to hand everyone a baby diaper pin when they walk in the door. Tell them they can't say the word baby. If someone hears them say " baby" they get to take the pin away from them. Who ever has the most pins after a set amount of time gets a prize. Prizes can be candles, a plate of home made cookies, a small picture frame...anything small that you like. You could also make a word scramble on nice paper, roll it up and tie a pink or blue ribbon around it. Hand it to every one and see who can unscramble the words first. Use words like cradle, diaper, bottle...anything that has to do with babies. You don't have to have any games if you don't want to. It is still fun to sit around and talk and eat munchies and goo over the cute baby clothes and gifts.

I hate showers to, I gave a shower awhile ago and just had lucky plate and lucky cup...and just gossiped.
For snacks I made a wonderful salad of baby spinach and poppy seed dressing. Don't make ahead of time, put the baby spinach in a bowl, put roasted almonds on top and strawberries and mandrin orange if you like. and drizzle the dressing over and mix in a large bowl. It went over great. Plus I did the normal cream cheese and cherry sandwiches, Salmon, Tuna and egg sandwiches etc. and for desserts we had brownies, nainomi bars and cookies. I also made a salsa dip with nachos...it went over so well.
I picked up gifts at the local dollar store as prizes...and just put ballons on the prego's chair. She was huge so we had teased he about having a baby elephant...so, for a wall hanging I drew a stork that had sweat rolling off its face and tongue sticking out and from the feet we took a blanket and put a baby stuffed elephant in it...she thought that was hilarious.

I agree with you on showers, but they are fun ! I'm amazed how much people spend today !!!! One game we had was a basketfull of baby items....Show them one at a time to all ... cover the items and give the guests 5 minutes to write down as many as they can remember....highest number wins. I made individual cakes in the shape of booties ....There also are pads that have games to play at showers...one for each guest. Good luck, Grams !!

This comes at a coincidental time...my direct boss at work is having her baby shower tomorrow and I'm in charge of baking the cake...I'm not all that sure what to get her though. I figure she's going to be getting a ton of newborn stuff, but I'd like to get her something that she can use for when the kid gets a bit older. Any ideas on that? It's a boy by the way.

1. nice addition that I alway did was to make a box for the mom to be. It usually had pampering stuff or things just for her. I would put in a blanket that she could take to the hospital (for her not the baby), or for later to wrap around her sholders. Soothing eye patches, Lotion (they have some that are for new mommies), etc. Light scents are best (sometimes new mommies are really sensitive).

2. there are books and spots on the internet for games etc. Here are 3 that I just found, there are so many of them!
http://www.baby-shower.com/
http://www.babyshowertips.com/category/000831.shtml
http://www.babyshowers.info/

3. I would also make a diaper tree. Really easy. Get a pot (clay is what I used to use, it has some weight to it) get some flower foam (real easy any craft store can help you), cut the foam to fit in the pot (doesn't have to be neat). The get a couple of sticks, less than a foot high and with branches. Stick them in the foam and cover the foam. You can cover it up w/ almost anything, I can't use spanish moss (allergies) but they also have shedded paper or that stuff for easter (now they have it in other colors than pastels- you can get this also at the craft store). Have everyone bring a "BABY Coupon" - diappers, lotion, etc. You can mention it on the invitation or call people. Get felt and cut little triangles. Fold the large point up and pull the 2 smaller points to the same spot, glue them all together. Glue them right to the branches or you can get tiny clothes pins (craft stores are great). Fold the coupons and put them in side (sfter glue is dry). It sounds complicated but it's really easy and such a great idea.

4. we even made braclets at showers. Get some beads, letters, jewelry string, etc. We made MOM-TO-BE, AUNT, etc. It was different and fun. I still have mine :)

Most important.... have fun!!
Hope this helps.

One shower we had we played a game of matching the baby animal names with adult animal...like kit goes with fox. I also had people guess the weight of one of my Newf's...now that was funny! I think one person guess 250 lbs! :D

Here's a real fun game that we played. When each guest comes in, give them two slips of paper (small strips so they can fold for a drawing). On one slip of paper, they need to write down a question that a new mother would ask; and on the other slip, they would write down a peice of advice. from that guest on any subject that they may think would be beneficial for a new mom. The responses can be farfetch or down to earth. Using the father-to-be's name or writing about their involvement is better! Then, place the questions and advices in two separate hats (or whatever to draw them out of) Then the mom-to-be will reach in to grab a question (read it out loud) and then grab an advice (read it out loud) It was hillarious to hear the match ups! Sort of like a Mad Libs thing.

Another one is go purchase odds and ends baby items and set them on a table. Sort of like auction style, only each guest needs to estimate the TOTAL cost of ALL the items. You should obviously keep tract of how much you paid. The one closest to the total price wins a prize. Oh yeah, they need to write it down on a paper to 'prove' they were the closest.

Oh yeah, if you have a big prize (meaning whatever is more expensive than the rest) say whoever's birthday is closest to the mom-to-be's due date without going over ... gets it. If you have tables and use a simple flower arrangement centerpieces, this works well also. Its just the people within that table who is the closest and they will receive the centerpiece.

As for the prizes, I went to a bed, bath and beyond thing and got panty drawer scented liners, sachets, scented oils, candles, bath oills and salts. Nothing expensive but, girly pampering (no pun intended) stuff.

For food, its the normal buffet style stuff. You don't really have to go overboard. maybe a veggie dip, chips and dip, meatballs, ziti, salads. I would go nuts.

Hope it helps! I'll post more if I think of more. its been too long for me. LOL

Ohh, and remember, most people just enjoy the atmosphere and chatting with one another and don't harp on too many details. They'll enjoy themselves no matter what!

And, since its in November, maybe a nice hot or cold cider punch would be nice. I have a recipe somewhere here, I'll have to search for it. I'll let you know.

Debi - I'm sure you've got one of the ubiquitious WalMarts in your vicinity. In the freezer section they now have the LOVELIEST little mushroom turnovers and lobster puffs! Absolutely delicious and you just bake them in the oven. Make some sort of champagne punch, but substitute non-alcoholic sparkling white grape juice for the champagne - or make mimosas with the juice instead of champagne. I think there are even little individual frozen quiches that are excellent. There is some excellent spinach dip available in the deli section, add a log of Montrachet (goat) cheese, maybe a round of brie, a big bowl of fresh, seasonal fruit salad (apples, grapes and walnuts for a start, maybe), a couple of crusty baguettes sliced and maybe a bowl of those little wheat rolls, and how about an ice cream cake? You're set and you aren't too tired to enjoy watching your daughter's face light up.

Oh, and make sure you've got some extra lobster puffs and a REAL bottle of wine for you and Dave later that evening ;)
