My first dog Bear (female chow x) was named by some homeless people she was living with before she hopped into her rescuer's car. When we started fostering her, I was going to change it, because Bear was "such a boy dog's name..." We never did change it, in 10 years. She wasn't the girly-dog sort anyway. :)

Penny came named, also. Her rescuers named her that because she has tan points, and the tan is close to a penny's color. It was a perfectly fitting name for her. Plus, then I get to be a big dork and lift her up saying, "Find a Penny, pick it up, and all the day you'll have good luck." ;)

I don't know why his last human named him Jed, but each day he does something that makes me think that Jed is very appropriate. The belching and the gas and the way that he looks out the large window in the dining room as to say 'Get the h#ll off my lawn!' and the way he sleeps on his back with his paws all spread out and catching flies with his mouth in mid-air clinches it.

Spanky was named by one of my sons. It was kind of his turn to name a pet. We had been on vacation and had watched one of the Little Rascals movies, so I guess Spanky was fresh on his mind.

His sister absolutely hated the name Spanky. She tried to persuade him with several names. We called him a couple of different names before Spanky stuck.

Spanky fits his personality, I think. Because of his unruly, wiry fur, Alfalfa from the same movie would have been fitting, too. I didn't really want Alfie for a name, though.

My daughter still will say she doesn't like the name, but she does finally call him by his name!! He was named Rebel at the shelter.

Omigaw, I'm ROFLMAO here!!!! That is a GREAT reason!!! "Hunter" was dubbed that at the shelter and he already knew it. My ex-husband and boyfriend at the time (now my husband) kept telling me how it was a queer faggot yuppy name and not to keep it. They wanted something like freakin' Brutis, or Cletus, or what have you. I LOVE the name Hunter and it fits him and it stuck. It's not meant to be a "people's name" of Hunter. Ironically, he couldn't even hunt or catch a mouse or even stalk a squirrel!!!! :p

The shelter in West Virginia named her "Spice", but I hated that, and she didn't know it anyway. I wanted to name her Anise (Annie) keeping with the theme, but my cousin had just named her baby Anna. So, she became Meggie (for Nutmeg), and it mutated into just Meg.
