Maya was $150... a misguided petstore purchase. I still have horrible guilt trips over the fact that we bought her at a petstore. I truly believe that she was meant to be a part of our lives though, and if I hadn't gotten her I would have never found Chaz. So now because of that I know better than to ever buy another dog from a petstore. The store we got her from takes in oops litters and advertise them as "rescues". That's what Maya was. Her mother was a beagle who got pregnant by a neighborhood stray. They call all their kittens "rescues" too. After we got her, they started a website for the petstore... it's www.stacyspets.com. I get physically ill looking at the site. The puppies are so poorly bred I can't believe no one can tell. And check out the kitten page. You can get a kitten free with any $40 purchase. :( I planned on getting my next dog from a breeder, but I've decided I would rather the rest of my dogs be shelter dogs.
That site is pretty sad. So they really have recues though? Not that it matters since they are just selling them with no questions asked. That $40 deal is so sad. :(
I know how you feel. Lucy was from a puppy store and I feel so guilty, but that guilt is accompanied by enormous amounts of never-ending love and I wouldn't give her up. I will never buy another one from a pet store though.

Tango was free, as was Tia, and Piper because of how I got them all. Winston was $70 from breed rescue, though he would've been $200 but he came to the rescue up to date on vaccinations, was neutered, and besides his lack of weight, was very healthy. It helped that we're friends with the woman aswell. Morgan was $200, from breed rescue. My next dog (if I stick with a Toller) will be $1500. If I end up getting a Belgian instead, I'd guess it'd be around the same amount but I'm not sure as I haven't really talked to breeders yet.

I guess they could be considered rescues in some sense, but as there is no screening for the homes they go to, I don't consider that a real rescue. They are basically just oops litters like I said. Basically anyone can call them on the phone and say they have a litter of mutts they want to get rid of and if the puppies are cute enough, they will take them and sell them for around what I paid for Maya. The kittens are probably just from people who won't bother to spay their cats and don't want to deal with finding the kittens homes themselves. Speaking of selling them no questions asked. Let me tell you how easy it was to get Maya. Chris said I want the lightest colored one in the bunch. They rang up the purchase took Chris' credit card and we made arrangements to pick her up after work. No questions whatsoever. I mean none, not even if we owned or rented. We rent an apartment and I would have at least expected them to call and verify that we could have pets. Nope, nothing. Makes me sad thinking about where all these other poor puppies go.

The last Golden I bought was from a breeder in 1989 for $500.. most were from my own breeding , Chip was a " return " and free .... then there's my folly, Ollie through hs/Petfinder at $120 ...neutered/shots/microchipped.

I know, I can only imagine. Who knows what kind of people would go in there and ask for a puppy? Maya got very lucky with you though. :)

Thanks Momof2Pups. Your pups are lucky to have you too. Maya was one of 4, and I thank god we got her. I can only hope her sisters and brother got as good a home as she did.

Buddy's adoption was $105. His medical costs have turned him into a very pricey dog though. ;) We're talking thousands, a lot more than all of the prices mentioned.

Banzai's adoption fee was $150.

Regardless of how much they cost, though, we love them tons. :D

vixie was $650 from a breeder
dodger was $600 from a breeder
charlie was a $500 "rescue" we got him from a puppymiller who was closing down and selling her stock, he was worth every penny.

Our closest shelter is 3 mins from my house, its $200 for a mixed breed adult, $300 for a mixed breed puppy, $400 for a mixed breed from puerto rico (sato) and $500+ if they get "purebred" dogs in :yikes: i think there taking advantage.

its anything from $50-$200 for cats and kitten

and they wonder why there always full, and there constantly complaining that the animal welfare has a "higher turnover", not a suprise when ALL their dogs and puppies go for $50.
i worked there for sometime, there a no kill which i LIKE, but they also have about 1/4 of the kennels filled with DANGEROUS and highly agressive dogs, because even those dogs are no kill. one even attacked on of the workers, the latch wasnt closed properly he got out and latched onto this man under the arm, then when the man fell the dog let go and the man moved and the dog got under his other arm, almost 300 stitches for the poor guy and 4 years later the dogs still sitting in a kennel growling and snarling and lunging at everyone that walks past. luckily the guy recovered and quit the shelter.
I dont understand why a dog thats obviously that dangerous towards people is taking up a much needed space in the shelter.

but yeah sry kinda sidetracked there.

Max my Doberman was $1500, plus the air plane ride here....nothing but byb around here, so I found Max through the internet "system" after we got him, I did find a Dobe at the humane society (like a week later) but they said he should be around children 12 and up. Max is excellent with my 3 boys, but the lady really concentrates on temperment with her dogs. We also have a St. Bernard-Diesel who came from a byb for $300.

I can't say I would buy another expensive dog though...yeah his parents have been tested, he comes from good lines, etc but my next dog will be a good ole' mutt from the humane society.
