Well i just got my first dog and I really didn't want the dog to be inside because I don't live alone, and I didn't want to wake people up during the night. So I decided to put it outside in the night, and that didn't go so well. My dad told me it would cry loud the first night and it did!!!! But anyways my question was... when is it going to stop wimpering and crying at night????

I'm sure your roommates/family/whatever wouldn't have a problem with you keeping your new dog inside, at least until it's a bit older. If they do, they are cruel. If you can't arrange things so your pup can be comfortable, maybe you shouldn't have gotten a dog at this point.

I also agree that the dog should be kept inside.
It is a baby and not used to being alone.
Bailey never cried during the night, so i can't help with telling you how long to expect this.
Have you tried having the pup in the house?

You have a <8 week old puppy you leave outside and wondering why "it" is crying???? Getting a PET for your home should be a decision made by ALL that live there. Why did you get "it"? Does "it" have a name? What kind of dog is "it"? Why did you get "it"? Obviously not to be part of your life and home. This is just so sad. Let us know if you want true input as to how to acclimate a puppy into a loving family/household or if you just want to know how to shut "it" up...

I really hate confrentation, especailly on a friendly forum, but I will have to agree that you should bring him inside. Even in the summer nights can be brudally cold. It's like leaving a baby outside with no one. Please just bring him inside, maybe buy him a dog bed to sleep in at night... I'm sure he wouldn't be crying if he was worm and felt safe in your house, so you shouldn't have to worry about noise.

I think her coming here shows that she's looking for advice.

YJA25 you may want to sit your family down and try and come up with some reasonable terms for how your puppy can be kept inside. You should highlight the reasons why puppies need to be inside and find out why they don't want her in the house. Then try to compromise. Maybe you can get a crate and keep her in your room. Chances are she won't cry like that if she has people around her.

Here are some things to keep in mind
- puppies don't regulate their body temperature as well as adult dogs
- she was taken away from her mom and siblings too early
- she will bond with you better if she is with you inside
- you won't housetrain her if she is outside all the time
- if she is outside all the time she will be vulnerable to weather, people, other animals, and anything she can get into. Plus it's easier for her to escape.

There's more and I'm sure other people will point them out.

Why do you have to be so rude???? His name is REX for your information and the first night I had him I kept him inside my room and it cried alot, and when I took it outside to use the bathroom it wanted to be out there. So that is why I put him out there the second night!!!!! I never said that I didn't want REX to be a part of my life, because if I didn't want him to I would have never gotten him!!! I never said I wanted to shut REX up I just wanted to know how long they cried, because i thought it might be sick or something. So before you start talking maybe you should know the whole story!!!!

You need to get him used to it slowly. [click]

That is a website that walks you through crate training step-by-step. Keep in mind, it will take time and work, but it will be worth it to have him stay calmly in his crate when you can't watch him. I'm currently training one of my dogs to sleep in her crate. If you need any help or anything, PM me. I've crate trained quite a few dogs, and it isn't as daunting a task as it appears as long as you stick with it and use the link I gave you along with some good old fashioned common sense. Good Luck :)

Edit; also, I'm sorry I jumped on you before. I was upset about something else, but I shouldn't have taken it out on you. i hope you can accept my apology?

I don't crate train for a variety of reasons but there are lots of threads on this forum on how to get a puppy accustomed. You can do a search on the forum but a few pointers are to feed him in there and take your time getting him used to it. Make it a safe loving place for him. Buy a Kong, fill it with peanut butter and freeze it. Give it to him at night. It should keep him busy. Give him a sweater that smells like you to sleep with. Keep the crate by your bed so he won't feel alone/abandoned. Make it a fun place for him. Never use it for punishment. Always reward him for going in there. Try to get him to go in there and don't close the door. Give him treats for going in.

Remember that the first few nights he will cry. Try to put yourself in his shoes. He's been taken away from his mom and siblings and the family that he was born into. Went to a new house with strange people and when he got upset he was tossed outside. He's just a baby and that must be pretty hard on him. Sometimes it's easier to figure out what he needs when you keep that in mind.

You're lucky you haven't been bashed by us who are so compassionate A 7 week pup should never be left outside. Follow all the other posts and let us know how Rex is doing.

ok, no need to fight... I believe that Yja25 was unaware how sensitive a 7 week old puppy is. He saw that the puppy liked to be outside so figured that maybe leaving him outside would be fine. I'm sure Elin appeared to be rude, but the truth is she, like most of us, misunderstood the situation and was concerned about the well being of the puppy. Please let me know if i'm wrong about anything I just stated... There's no need to fight about a misunderstood situation!

EliN is just upset to hear of a puppy being left outside. I'm sure she didn't mean to come off so strong.
