I was looking at the Pedigree Database today, and when I got to the frontpage, I looked at the recent pedigrees section. It had in there a Shih tzu named "Shali-Hi Catch-Me If You Cancan". This was obviously a very well bred dog, she has MANY Register of Merit, Best in Show and Champion dogs. I get the name's that are simple; like Duchien's R-Man (GSD). That's simple, got it. I've just never put any thought to this before, but now that I have, I've come back stumped. LOL

I realize that this dogs name's probably mean something, I'm just not sure how to break it down. I'm spoiled on German dogs who's name is [dog's name] and either vom (from) or von (of) [kennel's name].

Shali-Hi Catch-Me If You Cancan
first part kennelname....

second part something catchy to be put into catalogs.
"Catch me if you can" is a phrase...typically a challenge issued...

a can-can is a french burlesque type dance I believe...so think of a saucy little behind on the down and back and taking the ribbons while you are left in the dust...lol.

I am not sure if this is what you are asking or not and someone else can probably explain it better but "Shali-Hi" is probably the kennel name that bred the dog and the "Catch-Me If You Cancan" part is probably a play on the dogs "call name".

Ah, so they try to a- sell the dog with something catchy and b- talk smack at the same time.

Awesome. :lol-sign:

Right but judges don't know the reg names of the dogs. It's mainly something to consider if you advertise or like me...just really enjoy thinking of good reg names or themes for your litters.

As long as the name contains the kennel name, and is within the allotted length, you can register a dog under whatever name you want. It can mean something representative of the litter, or contain parts of ancestors' names, or not. It's up to you.

Slade's registered name is Colray's Titanium Blade. Doesn't mean anything special, aside from I thought it sounded like a pretty slick-sounding name fitting of a male Weim, and the "titanium" bit ties in with his colour. Mostly, I wanted it to rhyme with "Slade", just for fun.

I have to admit, naming my boy Dominus perfectly sums up his personality though. So, I gotcha. I registered him before I really got hooked on the schutzhund thing though, or instead of Dominus Tiberius, it would have been something different.

Ya have to admit though, for a dog that can kick most grown men's butts, that's a pretty badass name.

If I remember correctly lots of 'show' people have A-names, B-names, ect..for their litters.

I think what they do is the first litter they breed is the "A" litter and all pups have a name starting with "A"

Second litter is the "B" litter and all pups are named with a "B"

And so forth.

kennelnames are not required...actually. If the breeder has a reg kennelname you need their permission to use it. You can name the dog ANYTHING you want kennelname or not as far as AKC is concerned minus the usual swear words and racial slurs.

The wording is "the person who owns the dog at the time of reg has the right to name it"

But of course...GOOD buyers follow their contracts on that...lol. I know a few folks that've gotten burned tho and ended up with "Chester" on the dog they want the people to show, and that's it...LMBO.

I do themse rather than letters but yes many show folks do like to use letters. Leo folks also follow the german letter thing many times.

I wouldnt tho...far far too many repeats on names once you have been in a while. End up With Casper IV or Sheba II...lol.

I had to pay double to get an open registration to call the dog whatever I wanted. In retrospect though, I'm not so certain why it was so important to me at the time. I still talk to my breeder though, he's contemplating having a litter out of Ty.

Working line breeders as well. I'm referring to GSD's not sure about other breeds I dont know of many other breeds with "vom" "von" "z" (czech mostly). But you are REQUIRED to use the kennel name in most cases

I'm still pissy that AKC wouldn't let me have **** in Mal's name and changed it to "Tairis Big Hero" which is just STUPID. :p ("Big **** Heroes." is a quote from Firefly, the show he's named after.) There's a bunch of dogs (kennelname **** Yankee!

I know this. :)

Vom actually was mentioning how working litters are "A-name" "B-name" and so forth and how "show" people have all the fun.

Just pointing out that some "show" people stick with "A" name, "B" name thing too. :)

Least from what I gather they do. LOL showing is not my thing so I am relying on the information I learned.

A lot of show breeders also use themes, which sometimes reflect the sire and/or dam - Ilsa's litter was Beatles themed, so she ended up with Bruda In My Life Ilsa. Ilsa's dam was also named after a Beatles song. Ilsa's siblings ended up with names like Bruda Drive My Car, Bruda Eight Days A Week, etc.

Ronin's litter was also themed, but not based on sire/dam names. His was a "sense" litter, so he ended up being Bruda Sense of Duty. His siblings had names like Bruda Lily Sense of Style, Bruda Sense of Honor, Bruda Sense of Pride... etc.
