i WISH i had pictures...

today was 90's with high humidity so after i got dinner done and cooking (about 5:30 ish) i donned my bathing suit, grabbed a towel and headed down to the beach 1/2 mile from the new house....

i chose to chill on the small semi private beach rather than head into the main beach in the state park at the very end of the road as the main beach was busy while the locals only beach was pretty empty.

i ventured into the ocean tide was heading out and its fairly shalow a good distance out so the water was LOVELY, cool but not cold...
i just chilled out for a while then suddenly i hear this "SPLASH" about 8 inches from my head.
theres blue fish in the area as well as sunnies and a bunch of other good sized fish that tend to jump in the early evenings but as i turn around there pulling out of the water is an absolutly STUNNING male osprey! He had caught a good sized fish and was hauling it up as i watched him leave the water, he had no fear of me being there, no problems and just off he goes...
unfortunatly he lost that fish after getting a good height, but it was a BIG fish who wasnt having any of it lol.

i couldnt belive it!
he was just so spectacular, so i chilled in the water watching him hunt, he took a couple of dives but didnt catch anything...he was flying low too, low enough for my to see every detail on his tail feathers, the band on his face, just gorgeous.

when i left at 6:30 i happend to turn back before walking home to see him dive one last time and come up with a nice sized fish and carry him off...

i had to look into it when i got home, osprey are slowly increaseing their numbers in the state and theres lots of platforms going up for them to encourage more, and theres a nest about 2 miles down the road.
but still, ive never seen a WILD Osprey, and to have one dive so close, i swear he was absolutly showing off...

Osprey have been on the recovery here for a number of years. There are lots of nesting platforms for them, and there's one right by a rail trail where we often go for walks. You know you're being watched during the earlier part of the summer when you walk by it!

Kingfishers are another bird that are great to watch, they dive straight in from pretty good heights. There some of those around here as well, used to be able to see them at my parents quite often.
