So the hybrid has the highest MSRP, the lowest horse power, a listed MPG of up to 45, which is easily attainable by all of the other cars, can only be serviced at a small number of locations, mainly dealerships, and those will be more expensive due to the fact that it's a hybrid. I can't find a range on the battery, or how long it takes to charge, so I don't know how that will affect road trips with it.

All in all, I see it as a bunch of extra money spent for nothing more than being able to say that you drive a hybrid. Not to mention that the hybrid has all of 10 cubic feet of cargo space.
Yeah, I just didn't want to burst her happy bubble entirely. :D

My husband has an 05 honda accord v6 hybrid. Why the farky fark he got that thing I will never know. Gets, MAYBE, a little bit better mileage than the regular v6, trunk space is crap (can't fold down the seats), and it came with a hefty price tag. The battery is warrantied for 7 years so we will be getting rid of it around that time...

well here are my current choices..
Ive decided after talking to you guys and hearing from the guy who fixes cars for my family, to not go for a hybrid

2009 Civic Sedan EX with Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation Systemâ„¢

With GPS, leather seats, yada yada
Total MSRP as built $23,125

And for $34705
..The VW eos :)

With GPS, leather seats, yada yada

I like the eos more obviously, but im trying to make a smart decision, not an "oOoO pretty!" decision lol

Huh...didn't realize that the Volkswagon TDI's weren't available south of the border. They've been available here for years, I know different people that have (or have had) them. Seem to take a lot of use and abuse, if I were thinking diesel in a car I wouldn't hesitate.

(They are available in both the Jetta's and the Beetles here, BTW, not sure about in other models.)

They're available here - just not in a handful of states, and the 2009 Jetta TDI is widely available tmk.

Fran, I've gotta say - go for the Civic. I know there's the "ooh, pretty!" factor but that's over $10,000 of a difference. Unless you know you can afford that, I wouldn't go for it.

Yeah, even if you get 10 more miles per gallon... that's a lot of miles to make up for the huge price difference.

I don't know how much help I'll be: I drive a 2005 Toyota Prius. I've been getting almost 50mpg in real world driving conditions. I LOVE MY CAR! LOVE! There's room enough in my car to get a boxed bunk bed set in it (Not if you want to be comfortable mind you but it IS possible). The Prius has Sonsumer Reports pretty happy also. It's user friendly, environmentally friendly, deceptively roomy and easy to operate. I just filled my tank with 9 gallons today and had travelled 450 miles on the previous tank. It cost me $16. All four dogs fit in it. My son likes it. Have I mentioned I love my car?

Well, I looked at the VW EOS and decided it was too expensive, so I bought a Ford Mustang, because, well, I wanted one. Its more fuel efficent than an SUV, but certainly no record breaker, and you can in fact fit two dogs in it. Just not in crates and not very easily. I LOVE my car, but I would not consider it a practical choice considering the sort of things you are looking at.

About the colors . . . both white and black are a PAIN to keep clean. White will be cooler in hot weather. Black will look cooler. But another color than either is better; either of those colors will always look dirty. White because its well, white, and black because it shows dust like no tomorrow. So there's my totally shallow comment :)

Please return to your technical specifications . . . .

I have a prius and while I don't like small(er) cars, I do love that it's kinder to the environment (especially in comparison, I used to drive a truck *sobs* I miss it) and its kinder to my pocketbook with my huge commute. It's got leather seats, gps (looooove that) and the Three B's fit in it for short trips. Can't ask for much more than that. And I'm a loyal Toyota driver.

I'm trying to hold out for one of the new models. I really want a Prius! I'm glad you like it so much. :)

We have a 2007 Civic Hybrid, and we love it. We consistantly get between 45-50 mpg with lots of city driving (we live in KC), and it is much more roomy than the Prius (my husband has driven the Prius on several work trips). Our payments are very reasonable, and because the maitenance minder keeps track of oil changes, we can go around 8,000 miles before servicing. A fill up costs $20.00 and we can drive up to 2 weeks on one tank (we drive roundtrip at least 40 miles a day). We usually get around 450 miles per tank. We opted to not get the GPS because the systems get outdated pretty quickly, and it added quite a bit to the total. It was cheaper to get a hand held Navigation system that we could use in both vehicles if needed.

They didn't have the leather option when we purchased the car, but the fabric seats are relatively easy to keep clean. I didn't like the colors they had for the Hybrid then, but we ended up with Silver because of the limited availability. My husband did extensive research on the car before we purchased it, and between the reliability, the gas savings, the maintenance costs, and the resale value, it ended up being the smartest buy that we could make.

It doesn't have much horsepower, and the only thing that I don't like about it is that it sometimes doesn't accelerate quickly enough from a stop. Once you are driving, though, it has plenty of power to pass.

I thought Honda was only better at lawnmowers? ;)
I laughed watching Chevy's recent ad with Howie Long.

What kind and how much driving do you do?

That VW is sweet!!

But I always recommend people go with a Civic or Corolla if they drive a lot and need a great car that will be around forever... I had a Corolla in High School (an OLD one) and got a newer one when I went to College...I drove a lot at school and coming back home... there was never anything wrong with that car, changed the oil and put gas in it and it started every single day without complaint (I went to college where it snowed A LOT). Reliability to me at the time was the most important thing.

Good Luck with either decision.

I do drive a lot. School, home, work, training, plus road trips are kinda common

the VW is very cute but I spoke to my dad and he said for that price, i might as well get a 3 series BMW..

the Civic is pretty much what im leaning towards. Its safe, less expensive, reliable. Kenya has a seatbelt and sits in the back seat altho i would like the space to put a crate. Im gonna see if the seats fold down

also my dad (who is paying for the car) sais the civic would be a more appropriate first car.. and he will see if later on I can go on to the convertible and something a little more "pretty"
