Just recently, Charlie has been shaking his head frequently, and sometimes scratching at his ear. My first thought was "ear mites". We have dog and cat ear drops to treat ear infections and mites, I've been applying the drops in his ears a couple times a day. I will keep treating it myself for a little while and if the head shaking still persists I will take him to the vet. I was wondering, besides ear mites what else could be wrong? I checked inside his ears, I see no wax, I smelled his ears and these are no faul oders.

Thanks everyone.

If it were me I'd get some ear wash & clean his ears really good. I know at times when my 2 get an infection it isn't always obvious at the beginning other than the head shaking. If it persists he'll probably need meds from the vet to clear it up.

What shall I wipe his ears out with? Just a cotton ball with water? The drops I have are also for curing ear infections, but I've only been using them for a couple of days now.

A dog's ear canal is kind of a 'J' shape and is at least 2.5-3 inches to the drum, so when you use a flush/wash you should be beside him and turn his head away from you a bit and extend the ear. This opens the canal. Massage the ear at the base to encourage anything to come up that might be down in and use several cotton balls to dry out the canal.

Use the antibiotic drops only after cleaning and drying or they might just be diluted by wax and debrie.

However, another thought is not to rule out a foreign body...like foxtails.

Hope this helps.

At any pet supply store you can pick up ear cleaning solution that does a pretty good job then follow the method the last post described.

Thanks for the info, that should help a lot. :)

The poor baby's ears must be really swore, this morning he didn't want to get the ear drops in so I had to squirt them in really quick and when I took it out there was brown stuff that came out with the dropper.

I had the same problem with my Dalmatian she loved to lick her mothers ears and they would get infected... I started using a ear cleaning solution and that fixed everything.

maybe you can help me then also. my lab has been doing some mild head shaking and some scratching at her right ear. i've done the ear mite solution and it seemed to get rid of alot of the brown waxy stuff and a few pus pockets that may have been from her scratching/infection. those are cleared up though.
my question is this....what could the watery/squishy sounding stuff be further down in her ears (yes, both of them) be??? i thought that would go away with the brown crud, but it is still there. when i clean her ears with cottonballs it comes out kinda wet and brown. her ears don't smell and the parts you can see are pretty clean...it's further down that is squishy.

what gives???

The squishy comes from massaging the ears as the wash works down the ear canal ....I used to massage the ears for at least 3 mins. then let the dog shake his/her ears. Personally, if this doesn't work , it's off the the vet. Cotton balls and swabs are a must. ( don't go in too deep ! )

her ears are still squishy and i haven't used the meds in at least 2 days (it said 7 - 10 days and it's been that long). is this left overs? should i just keep massaging and let her shake it out and if that doesn't work go to the vet?
