A year ago today a litter of pups was born in Moosonee under dreadful circumstances. Dogs are allowed to breed indiscriminantly, as there is a literal bounty on their tails. What started out as an idea to cull packs of roaming dogs, has allowed people to supplement their income with $80 per dog tail.
Luckily there is a rescue group that has contacts in the area, and they try to save as many of the dogs/puppies as possible. It's an expensive venture, and harrowing for puppies and dogs to be trucked/flown/driven out of town in the dark of night, but "the dog dump" is a far worse proposition.
Bernie was brought down late January, arriving with 16 other puppies, and named Basil
. We found him on Petfinder one late January day, and a week later, at the tender age of 7 weeks he came home with us.
Here he is the day after a 3 day trip from Moosonee to Bracebridge.
And today:
We love him very much, and he has done nothing but change our lives for the better (mostly LOL). He's a serious dog, with an admirable temperment. We could not have asked for a better member of the family to join us.
