I'm not on as much anymore, but a few times I've posted about the issues with Hades and the introduction to the dumbell.

We've been working hard, very hard... And because Hades, is... much "softer" than Roxy, it's been hard, very hard. One wrong look, one wrong word in a certain tone of voice and Hades shuts down, ears back, tail between his legs.

After coming to Chaz, Red and Tess gave me some ideas to help with him, which we did... They seemed to work, but he still refused to touch the dumbell unless my hand was on it. I'm pretty sure this is because of all the intense take it/leave it work we did. Hades will not take anything off of the floor until I pick it up, and offer it to him, saying take it.

They both started their new set of groups last week. (No one is at the dumbell stage yet). My trainer saw that Hades was taking the dumbell well when it was in my hand, but I showed her how he cowered and avoided (like in take it/leave it) the dumbell when it was placed on the floor no matter how much I hyped him up before I tossed it a few feet away.

She suggested to cut a tennis ball and put it on the dumbell, so he would only see the ball and fetch it. He loves fetch.

So I did it. And it didn't work. At all! Same old thing.

So in our class during individual work we practiced taking the dumbell, in front of me (with me holding it), to the side, making him jump up to get it etc.

Than I placed it on the floor, my hand still on it. He takes it. WAHOO! TREAT!

AND THEN LOW AND BEHOLD he picked it up off the ground without me touching it! YAY!!

Within 5 minutes, he had begun picking it up off the floor, and chasing it down and retrieving it!

So, the end of my story is, Hades has finally understood the whole dumbell excerise! He's doing a full flat retrieve already!!

Hopefully I'll get a vid of it soon so you guys can see, but boy am I a happy camper! :D

great work, RCD.

Moving from taking the DB from hand is a huge step for many dogs.

One reason why I love the "between the knees" method. You never put your hand on it in the beginning so the dog does not habituate to this.

Good luck, sounds like you are coming along great!
