I have a female pitbull that is just about 16 months old. The problem is that she sometimes acts as if she is 6 months. I got her young, 7-8 weeks old. I have been having a couple specific problems. Yet they might be common problems I wanna get some advice with someone with kownledge of female pits. She is very very energetic. I take her out on long walks/bike rides daily, yet she is still very wild; i thought she would begin to grow out of it with age but no. The biggest problem with her is when guests come to my house. She is very obidient when its just me and her in the house. She usually just roams around the house playing with her toys or just lays on the floor. As soon as someone comes in the house, she goes crazy, jumps all over them licks them, and will not calm down. I have held her by the collar in the presence of others for up to 20-30 min so she can calm down and catch her breathe, but even that she will jump all over the guest. I also have a big problem with her begging, she is constantly whining and begging when someone eats around her, even when she has food in her bowl and chew toys around. Anyone with true smarts about female pits please help regaurding to this issue, general issues, or issues you have faced with your female pit. thanks

I also have a female pit, she will be 2 yrs next month and she is extremely hyper. Usually when I have guest come I will put her up, either outside on her chain (I have to she jumps my 8 foot fences) or in her kennel for a while. While I realize it is her house, it is also mine and I know I dont like when dogs jump wild all over me and I imagine my guests dont either. As far as meal times, she is usually outside or somewhere, she knows the sterness in my voice and she knows that when the big momma growls she best listen. All I can say is diligence with her. I know it is hard, but reward her when she does listen, and when she isnt begging let her know by telling her good girl. 16 months is still a pup and practice will make perfect. Nalla is very person friendly and loves people. I dont mind her around people, but she also knows that I dont like it when she is up in their faces. Maybe have a time out area for her when she is doing something that you dont want her to do, and this way she will soon associate that with the incidents that are occuring. There are many other pit owners on here that will chime in soon, dont fret, she is a baby and will soon be a teen :)

I have a 11 month old male and he is the same way with company. I swear he thinks everyone that comes over is there for him.

When I know someones at the door I put a leash on him so we can keep him under control. He loves to lick also, but doesnt ususally jump up on people. I also found putting him in a sit and wait and asking the company not to pay any attention to him (not even a glance) settles him down alot. Then we allow him to go over to them and if he gets hyper we bring him back to us and back in a sit.

She is very obidient when its just me and her in the house. As soon as someone comes in the house, she goes crazy, jumps all over them licks them, and will not calm down.
We have also taught him to settle (our way of saying calm down). He now is realizing what we want from him, and no settle... no guests.

If you havent taken her to obedience training, Im sure that would help. If you cant for whatever reason people here could help you to teach your dog.

Kaine also likes FOOD any and all. Putting a leash on her and taking her away from whoever is eating could help. I would put her in a sit or down and when she acted good I would praise her and after they were done eating and she is still good I would praise again and then offer her a treat a really good one. She will then associate being good when someone is eating and the treat afterwards. Just make sure that you or anyone else are not feeding her when you eat, that would be confusing to the dog.

to me it sounds like you arent giving her enough attention so she is seeking it out somewhere else... and that is your personal visits :D... JMO

... why would you say that?

Kaine does the same thing hers does with the company and it sounds like Mydogsloveme does too.
My dog likes People and just loves the attention from Anyone but I can tell you that he is Never lacking attention from us. He is with us every minute we are home (I only work part-time)... in the yard playing, In the house playing, running errands, daily walks at the park, etc, etc.

attention

Im 99% sure attention isn't the issue. Dazey is my other half.... A day doesnt go by that I dont take her on a 2-3 mile bike ride along with letting her play with my neighbors dog

madey dog used to be same way

Madey is very very hyper she used to do the same thing to my guest. I found that training her to lay down stay and train her also head down. tell your dog to lay down and stay walk away if she already knows this skip it tell her lay down then tell her head down and gentlely push her head to floor then say stay if she raises her head tell her head down repeat till she gets it when you want her to get up give her your release word i just say ok she knows from experience now that she waits for the words she gets the reward if she gets up hyped and ready to go tell her immidetly madey down head down stay she will figure it out in no time they are so smart.hope this helps

You have very nice pits. Thats sure is a good score for the breed. Don't worry they will mature as they get older. They're really like that. Adorable...

I agree with Champagne...very good advice. That is soooo common for dogs to get all excited when guests come over. It's got nothing to do with how much attention they get. Mine get plenty of attention and they still get silly when guests come over... for a few minutes. They think it's a party. Of course, it's quite difficult to get people to keep things low key when they come over. But if you do what Champagne said, I'm sure things will improve over time. It's a learning process and your pup is still very young. Obedience trianing reeeeeeeeelly helps. Good luck.

Oh, 16 months....not VERY young, but young. (I didn't read that right)She should start settling down pretty soon if you work with her.

This is a common problem that owners run into. People just do not do enough research about a specific breed before they go out and buy a pup. Pit bulls are working dogs, period. They need something to do all the time. They have endless energy! Even when your pit reaches 4 years of age, she is still going to have alot of energy. She will calm down a little bit with age. You really should have done your research. Any pit bull site that you go to, it will warn you that pit bulls have alot of energy. Any working breed has huge amounts of energy.
