Relationships are work--much like gardening. You have to tend to the garden or it will be overcome by weeds and nothing can survive. Tend to it, and it can flourish. Enjoy the beauty and then time to tend to it some more. You can never sit back and take it for granted.

I would only add that when (or if) it becomes too much "work" and not enough enjoyment ... that can be when trouble begins. Along the lines of your analogy ... yes, it's work to have perfect roses, but if you never stop to smell them ... or for some reason can't seem to, ... then it all becomes just "work".
