My German Shepherd is a little over two years old and has floppy ears. The vet said we should massage each one for ten minutes a day about three times a day and they would eventually stand. Does anyone have any other ideas or solutions?

You might not be able to do anything for it- usually they are standing by 6 months or so. Some people tape them but it might be too late for that. I don't know if massage will help- it's cartilidge that makes them stand, if that never developed properly then the ears are what they are. You see a lot of GSD owners who don't let people touch the dogs ears when they are young- not allowing them to brush the ears back or down for fear of damaging them. I don't know how true that is, I never worried about it and my pups stood up by about 4 months.

Ears are not going to stand at 2 years of age. Ears stand on GSDs EARLY. A 2 year old dog with floppy ears has broken cartilege, and they will never stand without artificial help.

we had that problem with my sheltie but the other way around (they were standing up and were supposed to flop) but yeah we were told to fix it early on! (glue them down....) or else they would always stand up. We tried the glueing down thing but she was so bothered by it that we undid them and just let her be we weren't planning on showing her anyway. Lucky us they stood up for a while, then started flopping again, it went on and off for a while, now she's ten months old and they've been floppy for a couple of months steady. I would think that your dog's ears will always stay floppy.

We were also adviced to massage her ears, but that was to make them floppy?? so that got me a little confused that you would be adviced to massage them to make them stand...

hope you don't mind it too much! i'm sure your dog is just perfect and gorgeous the way he is!:)

You could possibly still tape them for a while and see if that helps any. I know that SHeltie ears can be taped after they are that age and sometimes it does help.

Riots were standing by the time he was brought home at 9 weeks.
