Ok, I know this may be gross, but imagine what it's like to have an extremely flatulent dog laying under your desk in 90 degree heat....

Lucky is an 8 year old Blue Heeler and has been in my care for the last year. I've tried changing his diet but have yet to find anything that has reduced this problem.

My vet gave me pills that will help increase the intestinal enzymes but it did nothing. I stopped treatment.

He's insecure, but there has to be a physiological reason for this. So, if anyone has any dietary suggestions or other ideas, they're very welcome!

He does have an overactive thyroid which will be treated non-invasively in the next couple of weeks. I have no idea if this could be related since there is so little information regarding hyperthyroidism in dogs.

So, any ideas here?

Oh the flatulance...:(
I used to deal with "Boxer Bombs" on a regular basis from my half breed... WHEW what a stink.
However, I have had great sucess with feeding her yogurt and digestive enzymes ( however she is raw fed, so I wouldnt know if they are alright for kibble fed dogs) Yogurt on the other hand... great for the farts.
Worth a shot

Yogurt is good; I use this product called "Dog Smog Remover" from Happy Tails on the occasion that Sawyer gets some gas. It's all natural stuff and works for bad breath as well (and people can use it too).

Make sure you pick up plain yogurt, nothing flavored. Add a few spoons to the food or even freeze it up in ice cube trays for fun cool de-fartsicles.

:lol-sign:

Ok, you just broke me up.....de-fartcicle....

I found the dog smog remover and filed it away. I'll try the yogurt first. I won't be in the US for a month or so and ordering online only has it's benefits when it's national!

By then I'll know if I need to pick up a bottle!

Thanks so much!

Luckily I've never had the problem since my dogs of yore got into neighbor's garbage . ( Country living back in the '60s ) Now Ollie might wonder what he should do about his owner !!

ROFLOL! I love it! That is too funny. What a clever name.

Lyric just about killed me while I was making his make-shift homemad meals while waiting for my consultation with a nutrition expert. He was so bad that he could level a small town. Now, with his proper diet, including Now brand acidophilus, I have detected not the slightest gas leak from him.

HAHAHAHA...love you bubbat! and yes, pity our dogs for the occasional spurts we humans may have after eating something horrid. because diet change has cured their 'clearing the room' events, but I can't say the same for us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

seriously...I do add unflavored yogurt to their Innova. they haven't had us holding our noses for quite some time now. and it helps them eat the dry food, cause they only like it with something added to 'goop' it up. lol

Well, it's been two days with plain yogurt and so far so good. He still lets some fly (or drift) but it's probably due to the food he's getting right now. (Although the other's are fine with it.) (Proplan - I'm cringing....but now I'm better informed!)

I was concerned that it might change his stool but he's just fine.

I will be transitioning all 6 to Innova after having read the threads here on nutrition. I drive 3 hours each way once a month to buy food in the states, and there's a store that sells it about an hour further down the road, so next month we begin the transition!

Sounds good, but be sure to keep up on the yogurt...innova is infamous for it's trasitionatory fart stage! LOL! It does go away though.

This is awful. You're gonna get after me, but you know what I make for the dogs sometimes for a hot weather snack? Sometimes I use plain yogurt, but sometimes I use blueberry or strawberry and put some kibble in it, freeze it in ice cube trays and toss them one on a hot afternoon out on the grass. Ewwwww....sugar. But they love to lick those things. I figure one or two little cubes won't hurt them. Now I have raspberries coming on my vines and strawberries, so maybe I'll use plain yogurt and just add a few berries without any sugar. They love raspberries and "help" me pick them.

Good luck with the methane gas problem.

LOL. Tosca. Yes, it was seriously the worst ever. It was really like a deadly, poisonous gas. Like when you mix chlorine and ammonia and add a little extra fragrance.

I want to add that besides yogurt.......fresh sweet potatoes helped Orson's horrendous gas ALOT! I just zap sweet potatoes in the microwave until they are soft........remove the peel and mash them up. Just a little spoonful mixed in will do the trick. I sometimes still hear one, but I haven't smelled one in AGES! and that is what counts, hehehehehehehe
