Belmont Girl, 5, Recovering From Dog Bite To Face
(BCN) BELMONT The Peninsula Humane Society and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is investigating a report that a 5-year-old Belmont girl was bitten in the face by a dog late Wednesday afternoon, according to the Belmont Police Department.

The girl was bitten in an apparently unprovoked attack after petting the dog, a black Labrador retriever, while she was at an after-hours youth soccer game at Fox Elementary School with one of her parents around 5:25 p.m., police reported.

Fox Elementary School is located at 3100 Saint James Road in Belmont.

The dog was leashed and was being walked by one of its owner's friends, who had stopped to talk to the girl's parent.

The girl was treated at the scene and then taken to Sequoia Hospital for additional treatment and evaluation, according to police.

The Labrador has been impounded by the humane society, according to police.

I feel for the little girl but I wonder if she inadvertently provoked the dog.

I hate reading these stories because we are always left to wonder about the circumstances. Without knowing what really happened, it's hard for us dog owners to learn from thier horrible experience.

There was an update her in Indy about the 2 yr.old that was attacked last May . She's had 9 operations and they hope she can go home soon . She was a beautiful little girl , and her Mom said her face looks like she's been in a fire. She's getting some sight back in the eye that was out of the socket.... but still only has a partial ear. The hospital bills have been horrible, and they are doing fund raising . Her mother wants to show what she looks like to try to raise awareness of bad owners..... she doesn't blame the Pitt that attacked .

oh how sad!! There was a little girl in Okla. City that was bitten by a pit bull through a fence! The Pit's owners had known about the missing board in their privacy fence, but had done nothing about it. I think her parents should have been more mindful of the missing board as well. Apparently her arm was pulled through the missing board space, and mauled until her dad was able to free her. Unfortunately, they had to amputate her arm at the shoulder. Just so sad when we hear stories like these. I believe the pit was euthanized. I think that ANY animal in a fenced in yard feels territorial and will defend it's space. I know that both of my big guys would bite in a second if someone they didn't know came close enough or put their hands over the fence.

As for this story, I also wonder if she had inadvertenly done something to provoke the dog. Sadly, I'll wager that the animal will be euthanized. Just so very sad.
