Did you take Performance Fundamentals? I've heard good things about it and a new puppy is the perfect opportunity. I've done all of the stuff in the syllabus with Watson, but most not from such a young age.

And yeah, I was just as disappointed with the prey drive class. Looking over the syllabus for the distractions class it looks like a lot more of the same. Little training games that have nothing to do with your dog being distracted by things.
I did take it and I liked it. Hugo was about 5-6 months when we did it and I wish we could have started earlier.

I also was excited about the Distractions class until I saw who the instructor was :/

I am taking It's All in Your Head, and I think that's it. I have a bunch of other stuff to work on with my dogs. I'd be taking a class just to take a class and I don't want to do that.

Hahaha, I did the same thing! "Yay distractions class!" "Oh, darn"

The more I think about it the more I want to take "It's All In Your Head". We can be discussion buddies! I hope there is an active FB group for that class because I'd like to work through the homework and discuss with others.

I just emailed Deb Jones to ask her opinion on doing Performance Fundamentals at gold level. If she says it won't be too much for a baby puppy then maybe we'll go for it.

Yes! I want to take all three of that instructor's classes. And it'll be nice to take a class that is focused on ME and not my dogs :p

Well I just sprung for a gold. Foundation seesaw. O_O

I feel overwhelmed already haha. I figured we needed all the teeter help we can get.

Performance fundamentals at gold with the puppy! Feels weird to sign up for a gold spot in a class with a dog I don't even have yet ...

I think I'm going to do It's All In Your Head at bronze, but no rush to sign up for that.

Some day I may need that teeter class, because Watson is petrified of the thing now. But we have so many other things to work on first, and I also don't have a teeter. Hopefully it helps Hank!

Kep my BC boy and I really enjoyed Kamal Fernandez "FCI heelwork" last term so we are taking the "Advanced FCI heelwork" this term, Bronze. Kep is not ready to compete in obedience yet (he has not turned one yet) but during the last Fenzi term we competed in some Rally, we did 5 runs in total and he qual in all of them...Novice qual in New Zealand is 90...he got 2 x 100 points (both 1st place), and 3 x 99 points (a 1st, 2nd and 3rd placing). So he also got his RN title.

His heelwork is so nice compared to my other 2 dogs (both compete in rally and agility but not ob, although Gael used to she is not REALLY suitable) :) he is very focussed and I usually only ask him to do small steps, pivots or static work before rewarding him with his toy, but he was absolutely focussed and a very happy boy for the roughly 2 mins it takes to do a rally course. To compound things my husband's Brittany bitch was on heat at home and he is entire, so I wasn't sure where his brain would be. It seems to me from doing the work in the Fenzi course that he really understands heel position and sees it as his job to keep it. Looking forward to learning more in the new course!

I may be addicted to gold spots already. It is awesome!

One day I do want to do some of the heelwork classes. But I can really only do the one gold class and keep up.

Precision Heeling was one of the best classes I've done at FDSA. It was my first class and my first Gold, and I think we've gotten more from that one class than any other. The steps weren't really that hard, but I'd never seen anyone lay out pivoting -> heeling progression before.

Hazel and I did our first training session for Performance Fundamentals today. She is so frickin cute. And Watson is learning how to chill out in the crate in the basement while we train. I was pretty thrilled that she could work with me (her first "real" training session) while he whined. She only looked at him once.

I'm not sure I could keep up with one Gold spot! But for the courses I have done so far I find it really useful watching the Gold dogs and reading the feedback on their videos. Usually there is one or more that reminds me of my dog :)

So, I have decided to drop one of the courses I was planning on for August term.. I know.. I am addicted, I have like a years worth of classes planned out on my phone...

Anyway, I was thinking of adding the intro to nosework as something different to dabble in. I think it's NW101 or something like that. They added it to August term too.

So, has anyone taken it? What are your thoughts/experience with it? Good class bad class?

Thanks!

I'm kind of thinking about taking the Engagement class in August. I really wish I had just done some random course at bronze so I could get a better idea of the training methods used and such.

I think Laurelin took it and recommended it. I plan to take it and introduce Hazel to odor that way instead of the traditional way classes do it.

I have taken a few with Denise and you really can't go wrong. I like the FDSA but some classes are not so great. I have never taken a class with Denise as the instructor that wasn't great.

She has a couple blog posts on engagement that lay out the training methods that will be used in the class

I plan to take that class at bronze. We could use it at gold but I don't have the time.

I'll see what I can find on her blog this weekend - thanks for the idea! I've watched some training videos from students on YouTube tonight, but the blogs might be better. I don't doubt her skill or results at all, but I want to be really sure I'd be comfortable with the methods before throwing down the money for a gold spot.

Fenzi is all positive reinforcement training if that's what you're worried about? The school motto is "be the ripple" meaning show people that it's possible to get the same precision without using corrections. And that goes for all of the classes at FDSA, she hand picks instructors so that everyone only teaches using positive training methods. Some instructors are definitely better than others, but none of them will have corrections in their classes.

ETA: she is really super friendly and approachable. If you can't find your answers on her blog I would email/FB message her. I'm Sure she'd be more than happy to answer your questions.

Agreed. If you are worried about not being comfortable with the methods, I don't think you'll have an issue.

There have been classes I didn't love, or classes where I didn't like the methods, but that was just because they didn't work for me or my dog, not because I was uncomfortable with the methods.
