I apologize if this has already been posted .. so many threads have hit on the recalls already, but if anyone hasn't seen this it's about time FDA stepped up and was honest with everyone!

http://www.fda.gov/ora/fiars/ora_import_ia9929.html

"As of April 26, 2007, FDA had
received over 17,000 consumer complaints relating to this
outbreak, and those complaints included reports of approximately
1950 deaths of cats and 2200 deaths of dogs. "

Products listed that will be detained from China:

PRODUCTS: Wheat Gluten
Rice Gluten
Rice Protein
Rice Protein Concentrate
Corn Gluten
Corn Gluten Meal
Corn By-Products
Soy Protein
Soy Gluten
Proteins (includes amino acids and protein hydrosylates)
Mung Bean Protein

It still boggles the mind, doesn't it?

Well it's about time. I got pretty sick of reading how "dozens" of animals died. If I know three who are affected (one is dead) then there are thousands more.

Well h*ll, I can't add at this time of the morning.

That's 4150 deaths.

It's good they're acknowledging it, but the number of dead animals is just sickening .. and all because Chinese suppliers wanted to make a bit more money.

I read an interesting article about this and darn wish I had thought to save it. It has been in many of our foods here as well although the FDA says it isn't to be.
They say that they try to not allow this LOL OMG can you believe that. They are over there now inspecting the plant that did this and I am willing to bet they will approve it for future imports what do you bet ?

It's about time they stop saying only a dozen or so deaths have happened.

I mean, I know of at least 6 myself. Of course there are more than just a few.

It's so sad though. :(

"Dur, is 3000 more than 16?"

That's my impression of the FDA.

I'm just curious as to why if this has been happening for years (the Chinese adding melamine to these products), why we haven't seen the number of dogs die due to melamine toxicity in the past?

VERY good question.

I also keep wondering what ever happened to the rat poison analysis that came out of Cornell, of all places.

Now they're saying that it's a combination of melamine and cyanuric acid.

"(CNN) -- Scientists from Canada and the United States say they have new evidence for why dogs and cats died after eating contaminated pet food.

Owners of more than 4,000 pets have complained to the federal Food and Drug Administration that their animals died after eating food that was later recalled.

Inspectors found melamine in the tainted products, but not at levels that would normally kill. But researchers now say that it may have mixed with another compound -- cyanuric acid -- to produce crystals that may have been deadly.

"What we've done is experiments that show if you take cat urine and you add melamine to it and cyanuric acid, the crystals will form in the cat urine in a test tube as we're watching them, so it happens within a matter of hours," said Alan Wildeman, vice president of Canada's University of Guelph, which is renowned for its veterinary research center.

The crystals are suspected of contributing to kidney failure in pets."
