This afternoon I noticed Elwood had diarrhea. Since this afternoon it has gotten worse. He's going out every hour to poop and it's just watery and there is A LOT! He even just now was laying on the floor and just got up and pooped (I'm guessing he was trying to go to the door and just didn't realize he had to go that bad).

He is eating the Innova now and has been slowly weaned onto that and has still been getting the canidae chicken meal and rice kibble with the Innova at about 50/50. He drank some rain water today too that was sitting in the neighbor's pool for a little bit.

I know something similar happened to Hannah when she was a puppy but it was from rawhide, which he doesn't get. He gets bully sticks and hasn't had one since this weekend.

What could be wrong with him? Maybe could the Innova not be agreeing with him? His poop has been fine until this afternoon, after he drank the rain water. I'm worried and have to call his vet ASAP in the morning to get him checked out.

He MAY (but this is probably unlikely) have gotten into the dish of cat food. It would be less than a 1/4 cup of the innova evo dry cat food that he would have eaten. The cat food is in a seperate room and he is always leashed when he is in there (to prevent him from eating the kitten's food).

Okay, for starters, can you get his temp? Doggie temp should be around 101-102. If it's higher, call your evet. If not, then I would do the following:

Remove any and all food, treats, chews, etc. His gut needs to settle. I'd impose a 12 hour fast.

If you have immodium on hand, give him a dose.

Call your vet in the AM if it continues throughout the night.

It could just be the rain water disagreeing with him. But as I said, if it's no better in the morning, call your vet to be safe.

This is just what I would do...being the seasoned diarrhea pro I am.

No, I don't have a thermometer to get his temperature so can't do that.

I feed him half of what he usually eats this afternoon than noticed his poop was getting worse so I didn't feed him this evening. I haven't given him any treats or food since I noticed it was getting worse though.

I'll have to ask Mark to pick up some Immodium for me on his way home tonight I don't think we have any left.

Do I give him a whole dose, or half? He's 6 months old and about 35 lbs.

My guess is that it's the stale rainwater. Follow what Hannah says and have Mark pick up a thermometer when he gets the Immodium. As many health issues as your dogs tend to run into, you really need to have one of those on hand. And vaseline or KY.

Do you need just a regular one that you put under your tongue? Should I give him a full dose of immodium? We have that here.

I agree with withholding food for 12 hours. When you feed him again, only feed him a very small amount of kibble mixed with white rice. Each meal, gradually increase the kibble and take away more rice.

Innova always gave my dogs looser stool than all the other brands. There is a chance it's the food change...

Loose stools are no fun for the owner or the dog. The best route if there is no fever is to withhold food but you need to make sure that they don't become dehydrated so try to get them to still drink plenty of fluids. They will be losing a lot of fluid in the loose stools. If it persists I would still take the pup to see your vet. I never let diarrhea continue for more than one day if it is truely diarrhea without consulting my vet.

Definately fast him for 12 hours and then give him small meals of boiled hamburg and WELL cooked white rice. Not minute rice but the kind you cook for a long time. Slowly introduce the food by offering small meals. However, call the vet ASAP because with all the pooping he is doing he can dehydrate very fast...............Good luck and hugs to Elwood :)

We use the digital ones at work since they give a faster readout, which is alawys good with a squirmy dog that doesn't feel good.

Well today I walked to the store and picked him up some rice and mixed it with a little of his kibble. He seemed to do better this morning though but we gave him half his kibble mixed with some rice and his poop was not water anymore but not firm as it used to be. I hope it's not the Innova that made that happen because Hannah LOVES it I really don't want to switch agian.

Don't do rice and kibble.....he needs bland food right now until his loose poops subside. Did you buy ground hamburg and boil it to mix with the rice? That would be best for a few days at least ;)

I boiled some chicken for him for dinner but he didn't get it this afternoon. He'll get the chicken and rice tonight though.
