Taylor, now 7 1/2 months old Beagle/Poodle, has learned to jump off the bed. With this achievement also came multiple accidents. He often wakes up early in the morning (anywhere between 4-6) and relieves himself by the door and comes back to bed. How do I stop him from doing this? Crating is not an option since he already spends a lot of time in his crate during the day. For days when he doesn't wake up, he can hold from 11pm-8am. I am also concerned that he cannot hold more than 2-3 hours during his waking hours at age 7 months.

Also, I work full-time and recently decided to go back to school part-time. That means Taylor spends more time in his crate in the evening. I want to use a baby gate to give him more room to move around, but he has been barking more and more lately in the evening (even in his crate). I think he's fine in his crate during my work-hours. After receiving a lovely note (sarcasm) from a neighbor, I ran out and bought a collar that remits sharp beep when he barks. What is your opinion on this? Success rate? What other options do I have to teach him to be quiet when I'm not home?

Thank you.

The only way to stop early morning accidents... is to either crate him or get up when he does and take him out.. he obviously can not hold it as long as you want him to yet.

As far as the barking.. I dont like the collars at all... but some people say they work... I think he is just alone way too much. Is there anyone who could come in and give him so exercise in the middle of the day? If not, maybe you need to find a daycare that he can go to.

He is probably bored and lonely. He needs time to get out and play and have human contact.

Good Luck.

I'm with PoodleMommy. You have to crate the dog, or get up when he gets off the bed. This is why my 6 month old sleeps crated. He has to alert me that he needs to go out.

How much exercise does he get? It sounds like boredom barking.

If you are totally against crate training at night then you really have no other option than to get up when he does for a quick pee break.

How many hours is he crated during the day?

He is in his crate 8-9 hours during the day. In the evenings, 1-3 hours on the days I have class or have to run errands. I have a neighbor who's willing to walk/play with him for 30 minutes on some days. I should set this up soon.

I think I'll try to get up when he does. It's just that I'm not really sure when he has to go because there are several times he gets off the bed to just drink water and/or just walk around the apartment. Maybe teaching him to use a bell will work in this case?

I use the sound collar only when I leave the apartment. I think it's helping, but I'll give it some more time.

I would try to set up the time with your neighbor. Up to 12 hours a day is way too much time in a crate for a puppy... or any dog really.

For now while he is young, if you want him to sleep in bed with you, you will have to get up EVERY time he gets off the bed and take him out... you cant give him ANY chances to have an accident.

Again, I dont like the collars...and have very little experience with them... but I would think you would need to use it all the time for it to work effectively... otherwise sometimes he can bark and other times he can not... it seems to confusing.

Good Luck.

Thanks for the feedback, poodlemommy! I've been reading about the collar and I thought it's only used when you don't want them to bark. I don't want to eliminate barking completely - just when I'm not home. I allow him to bark when he's playing with me, it's short and quick. He understands the command "quiet" and doesn't bark when I'm home, other than when we're playing. I didn't want to use it, but I just don't know any other method to keep him quiet when I'm not home, regardless whether it's my fault for leaving him alone for so many hours.

beagles are barkers, short and sweet, they are one of those breeds that seems to like to hear their own voice and by allowing him to bark when hes playing with you then correcting him via collar your just giving the poor boy mixed signals, hes going to be so confused.

those collars to me are the "lazy" way out, too many people dont teach their dogs instead they slap a noise, shock or scent collar on them and let the collar do the work...
shame realy.

as for the early morning potty breaks, if your not willing to crate through the night, then your only option as has been said is to get up EVERY time he gets off the ebd and take him out.

id also suggest taking his water and food up about 1 hour before bed...

I wouldn't leave water out overnight. Not until you no longer have a problem with your pup holding it.
