Does anyone have any good remedies for doggy diarrhea?

One of my new fosters (I just got him from animal control) has absolutely horrid diarrhea! I know that it’s most likely stress and the food change (switching from whatever crap he was on before to Canidae), but I was just wondering if anyone had any good ideas for helping the diarrhea in the meantime…

Thanks in advance!

If you give the dog a very small dose of Kaopectate (sp?), it should clear up. Remember that they are not humans, so don't go with the recommended dose on the back. A teaspoon should do it for a medium sized dog.

Canned pumpkin!! Not the kind that you use for pies, but 100% pumpkin in a can. It works like a charm, and usually dogs love it.

One big can of pumpkin
3 cups plain yogurt with live bacteria
1 cup chopped raw liver
3 cups white rice

Mix all of the above and start with a tablespoon in half a cup of warm water, repeating every few hours and increasing the amount slowly as things clear up, then slowly add in kibble meals. With each 'meal' add some slippery elm (1-2 capsules, open them and mix in) which should sooth things out - you can add probiotic capsules as well.

I went through a year of the runs with the dogs long ago before figuring out it was a bacterial issue, and this did the trick to keep them hydrated and sooth things. I'd make up a batch and freeze to have on hand for when things 'exploded' again. Normally you would fast a dog for a day or two, but at the time I had a dog who was sadly underweight and couldn't afford to skip a few days of meals every few weeks.

Pumpking works great.

Just a question, have you had the pup checked out by a vet to make sure there are no health issues?

Rosefern, I have three things in my diarrhea arsenal -

1. Canned Pumpkin
2. Kaopectate - I get mine from feed supply. Good thing it's cheap, because my dogs need a lot of it in order for it to work.
3. Biosol (Neomycin) - marketed for livestock, but it works for dogs too. My 70lb dogs only get 3cc if that helps with dosage ideas. My breeder clued me in on using Biosol, it works extremely well.
