Any preferences??

Or are they both as fab as each other?

I am wondering which sex to favour when I get my dog. For some reason I have always said I wanted a fella, but have no particular basis for that decision! I am (if you didn't already know!!) a female myself and the dog will be mine (although it will live with me and my partner (male - in case you were wondering! ;) )

At the end of the day, I will go with the dog I feel is right, regardless of sex, I suppose!

Go with what ever your heart wants. If you find a female and you just fall in love with her then great, if a male than the same. The only downside to a female is the heat (female heat that is) If you do with a female get her fixed and you will have no worries

Only problem is that neutering a female costs more, well it does here with me in Wales, whether thats how its is everywhere I dont know, I almost had a heart attack when the vet quoted me £170 to have shadow fixed!

We just had our cat done... The price varies SO much. Ranged from £29 - about £69!!!!!! We went with the cheapest - and they were great. Really informative and friendly.

It's not really the neutering I am worried about - that will be done whatever sex.

I was looking more at personality. I have heard that it can be best to go for the opposite sex of yourself (which I can't see making much difference).

(ps SHADOW - I was in Llanberis at the weekend. Love Wales - beautiful! May move there eventually!)

What kind of dog are you getting?
I've always had male dogs, except one Australian Shepherd and she was great! But to me males seem to be better, but you must teach them that YOU are boss if not then they will become the alpha and it might be hard to undo that.

I have had both male and female dogs and I prefer females to males. My lab, who is a female, is so open to obedience and listened and respected us so much better than the males that we had. I am getting a poodle next week and immediately told the breeder I wanted a female no exceptions. I just find that my female wanted to be a companion more than the males.

It depends on the breed, but males seem to bond tighter to their person. My Aussie is male and he is my walking shadow, but that's also a characterisitic of the breed. The RottX is female and is just as affectionate, but more independent overall. But again, that's a trait of Rotties.

Really, it does just come down to which dog feels right.

yeah, i agree with zoom...although i have no personal experience with females...

the only reason i am posting in this thread is to say i hate when females are referred to as bitches, lol...ugh, that gives me the heebie jeebies every time i hear it...even though it is correct....anyways...continue on :p

I want a female myself. :) They are supposed to be more content with staying at home with the family, and because I'm getting a Mini Schnauzer, she should be active enough for me any way. :) I hear males are always wanting attention thought, and love as much as they can get. That part wants me to get a male. I'll have to TRY and keep an open mind.

PS. Dizzy, what part of the Wirral do you come from? I'm in Bromborough. :)

I've had both male and female dogs. My female learned faster when it came to training and manners, but she was definately a diva and tested me more. My males were slower to learn, but listened more consistently. I'm not picky whether my dogs are males or females, but if I had to make a choice, I'd say I prefer females. It's nice to walk the dog without the "leg lift" every 10-20 feet.

I have had both, and if I had to pick a sex, I would say a male. They seem to be more playful, and just more "fun" in general. My friend has a female Lab that is very playful at 2 years, but I would bet her playfullness fades out over the next few years.

i've had male and female dogs, the current one being male, and my opinion is that the personality of the individual dog is more important than the gender. :)

I didn't really care when I went to the pound...I just looked at some dogs and then Charlie was perfect! But I think I would prefer males.

Usually the female dogs are cutter than males. (That's only for me) :)
but it'd be better if you got your own sex.

One of my dog did "period" for few days and my brother didn't know what to do.

The dog I grew up with was a lady, but, like I said, I always wanted a male for some reason...!

I'm living in Oxton Mikey! Near B'head Park.

I agree with Zoom also, I have one of both and have experience with several breeds and genre mixes and I have found that females are usually more independent and take life a little more seriously. Males also take longer to mature mentally IMHO. That said, I love them both equally and I enjoy their differences.
