is there a book or class available where i can teach my puppy to defend herself in case another dog attacks her?

Your dog will defend herself without training. I think encouraging defensive behavior will backfire, especially without professional help.

With all due respect, it is your job to protect her.

Oh and she is still a pup, don't expect that.:)

When a dog is mature, they are built with instincts to protect themselves.
And one might be to flee. Not all defenses are stay and fight.

well, i kinda felt sorry for her earlier today walking down the sidewalk.

a german shepherd not weighing a pound more than her started barking directly at her (owner had a leash fortunately), and what did my girl do?

not run away or fight back- but barely budged an inch or two, turned her body 90 degrees, ducked her head, and made a little puddle on the sidewalk. almost like she was crying.

sure, she can mutilate my sandals beyond recognition, chase, scratch, and chew on my arm without warning, but when a small dog her size comes along and starts barking she is defenseless and traumatized.

apparently she's half pit. where was the dog "aggression" when it was needed? how ashamed i was.

That is absolutely NO reason to be ashamed!!
How old is your pup? Puppies are naturally more likely to submit to other dogs. When they grow up things do change........But be careful for what you wish for. A dog aggressive dog is not always a joy to handle. I know my yellow lab Shiloh is dog aggressive towards other females......heck I wish she would just puddle.:)

The best thing to prevent the "puddle" is socialization. It might also help in not becoming dog aggressive. Just try to get her used to everything: different "nice" dogs, places, people. etc.

Why are you ashamed? Your dog is still a puppy and some dogs are not dominant, and thats ok. Your dog will defend itself once he matures, and as Julie said your dog might flee, but that is still a form of defending.

I am not sure I really understand what you mean.

I hope you got your pup for the right reasons........Not to further degrade this breed!!

It sounds to me that this will be another "bad" name for pit bulls. Why can't she be a "bitch". I get the impression that you want your dog to "show out" so that you can show off how strong and agressive she is. Not a bright idea, especially since she is a pit.

Alrighty..

I have a question for you;

WHY the hell woudl you want your dog to be dog aggressive?!

Do you know how hard it is to bring a dog aggressive dog into public places with the chances of other dogs being there??

Do you understand that if you have a dog aggresive dog that YOU have the chance of getting charged if something happens?!

Do you know that BECAUSE your dog has Pitty in it she already has a "bad name" above her head.

Why dont you become the responsible owner that you should be and teach her that if another dog does that to her.. WALK AWAY!!

DO NOT encourage her to "fight back"

My dog right now will fight back if something happens and I am weary about having him off leash with dogs I dont know in case a little scuffle happens. Although he is not dog aggresive - only if the dog is aggresive to him.

I think you need to think about your dogs saftey before you do anything else.

Think on what Riot said, you have a pit mix you could use that to the advancement of the breed and mixes. Provided you dont encourage it to be dog agressive by standing its ground, in the eyes of strangers that could be a bad thing.

I truly hope you do not want your dog, especially her being a pit mix, to become more aggressive? Please do not bring any more bad light onto this breed. It is neither needed nor welcomed by Pit lovers such as myself and most others on this board.
Now, a better question would be how can you protect your dog in a potentially threatening situation. The answer to that is... walk away. When all else fails... scream, stamp your feet, throw something in the direction of the initiating dog. Something to get it's mind off of attacking your own dog. Don't touch the other dog unless it is harming you or your dog. If a dog fight is taking place though, do not try and physically break it up. You may end up dead.

Wow.

I have a pit mix myself, and the last thing I want him to do is become dog aggressive. He can hold his own if someone threatens us - but generally he's just trying to get other dogs/people away from me.. and isn't trying to throw down a fight.

Usually, I'm the one on hyperactive watch duty protecting HIM from other dogs, if a dog approaches us off leash (he's only walked on-leash) i will throw rocks, cross to the other side of the street or hurry my own dog home so i can go back out to try and catch the other dog (if it's friendly) to call animal control.

The best defense your dog will have as an adult is a conscientious, alert human on the other end of the leash. That way if you are on the look out, your dog can relax and enjoy her walk, and trouble will not erupt for either of you.

Also as she grows older, she will grow into her personality more. She's just 6 months old right now, a teenager!, and she is learning how to be submissive to some dogs, while others will be submissive to her. This is all part of the growing up process for a dog. The best way to teach her is to socialize her in safe environments.

Also, as she grows older, you will have enough of a fight on your hands in regards to bad press and the laws that are being generated in cities, states, and countries world wide in the form of Breed Specific Legislation (BSL). Pit bulls and Pit Mixes are routinely being targeted for laws that range from must wear a muzzle in public (Boston MA) to must pay higher insurance (all over the US) to will be confiscated and euthanized (Denver, CO).

Please don't encourage your dog to be dog aggressive... the BSL that targets our dogs are the result of people encouraging pit bulls and pit mixes to be aggressive agaisnt not only other dogs but humans as well. Each attack is another red mark against the breed which I have come to love so much.

You are such a smartass. Use a smiley so they can figure out that you're screwing with them, or we'll be here all day. And all that outraged huffing can't be good for their health.

Outraged huffing is ALWAYS good for the health! It keeps one on their toes... and keeps everyone from getting lax! It helps me to lose weight too! ;)
