Times being what they are and the shape that I'm in being what it is I've decided that maybe a little more vigorous exercise is called for. I've started trying to jog with my puppy Java. We do a mile loop on sand, most of it is soft. Java is probably about 3 or 4 months old but I don't know for certain(long story).

He likes to sprint. And he likes to sniff. But he doesn't like to jog. Any suggestions? I don't want to just drag him. And I'd rather not just sprint walk sprint walk sprint walk.

Thanks for the input.

For that young of a pup, I do not recommend having him jog for that long of a distance. Repetitive exercies is not good for young pups, especially larger breeds. Some running and romping, free exercise where he can choose to trot, walk, run, stop, turn....in other words....change his pace and stride is much less likely to cause bone and joint problems later. I'd recommend a shorter walk with a little trotting and then some good playing and running as he wishes in your yard. Until he's about 1 -2 yrs old, depending on his breed he should hold off on excessive, repetitive exericise. Your vet is a good source for consulting about this.

Enforced exercise on a puppy that young of any breed should be avoided. Growth plates are not closed, and this can result in all kinds of nasty things down the road.

Enjoy your jog without the puppy until he's at least 1 year for small breeds, and 18 months + for larger ones.
