My son's dog could not walk up the steps to the porch last night, when he got her into the house he noticed her face and eye was swollen and other areas looked swollen and possibly alump on her leg. If this were a snake bite would this be the reaction? What else could cause this? I am in another area and can't help with her and since he has medical problems he does very little for himself he won't take her to a vet. She is 14 which is against her in a crisis. Any ideas?

i realize it's an urgent matter, but considering the circumstances; that i'm not available to transport her to a Vet, does anyone have a suggestion of any home care which might be given?

i understand it's a difficult question. i'm just wondering if this sounds symptomatic of a snake bite? bug bite? allergy (although doubtful...)?

thanks!

Sounds like it could be a bee sting. Does the dog flinch that you know of when they bump on it's leg is touched? Able to see a puncture wound, or a stinger there, or anything at all?

I have had a dog and a cat bitten by a copperhead.
The cat dissapeared for two days and when she had enough strength she walked home her head was swollen and I found the two fang marks on her neck. She also from then on carried her head in a tilted position and couldn't close one of her eyes. She was taken straight to the vet and had to stay their a few days, and was on several different meds.

The dog was actually my brothers, a coonhound, but we both still lived at home at the time. So I took responsibility for her. Anyway the dogs back leg was swelled up about 4 times normal size. I found the fang marks on her too. She recieved a couple days vet care too. And was on very strong antibiotics because it also was infected.

Both of my animals survived, but they did get vet care. Although the cat, we assume was bitten a couple days before we found her again.

I hope this isn't from a snake bite.

If a poisonus snake did cause the bite, if you look carefully all around her skin by pulling up her hair, you might be able to see two fang marks.

It could also be an allergic reaction to a bee sting. I know you can give a dog benadryl, but can't remember the dosage for a dog. I will see if I can find it.

I will see if I can find anymore info for you, since this situation is not in your control. I understand.

when my brother's dog was bit by a rattlesnake, her head swelled and it did require immediate medical treatment. other causes could be any bite...I had a dog tangle with a mean groundhog once, and her face swelled. bee stings, but unless she is having a bad reaction to it, it wouldn't cause soooo much swelling. that doesn't sound like any kind of allergy, more like a bite. how is the dog now??? IF you truly can't get out, at least try ice. and check very carefully for the wound to get an idea of what it was. any chance the dog could have been hit by a car? poor baby...hope he's ok.

The benadryl is 1mg per pound, if a dog was 25# it would get a 25mg pill.

That poor dog, it's a senior, couldn't walk up the steps, has a swollen head and other places on its body, and it's owner won't take it in to be seen. Maybe it's possible it got jumped on by some other dogs, got hit by a car, got snake bite, or bit by some bug it had a reaction to, it's impossible to know or diagnose a treatment. The best thing is that it be examined by a professional.
