My dog has a red ring around his right eye.

At first I thought it was just blood from a popped blood vessel but then it didn't clear up. I then realized it was on the skin around his eye, and not the eye itself.

So then I thought that maybe he got into an animal and it was blood from that but it's been a while (3 days) and it's still there. I don't want to try to clean it because it's right there on the rim of his eye and I don't know that it's not an infection or anything.

Does anyone know what this might be? It's like right on the border of his eye and it goes all around the eye socket. It's not over the head or anything, just that one area (which is one reason for discounting the blood from an animal theory). It also seems to bother him because he tries to scratch at it (rubbing it in carpet and the like).

Wondering if I should go to a vet. Might be zoonotic.

inner eyelid..sounds to me..gently first peel back outter eyelid and flush with a boric acid solution..you can get at the pharmacy to see if there is something down inthere that is causing irritation..i once found a piece of grass where bin dog got to close while the neighbor was weed eating..then try a eye lubricant gel while you get to some neosporin ointment for the eye from the vet..if that doesn't work their may be a growth like Mary has..

Lol actually no I can't get a picture. I had tried to do that in the first post but the dog is scared of everything and ran from the camera, especially with it that close to his face.

Hopefully it's nothing more than just irritation. We're taking him to the vet later today so we'll find out then...

His litter has had a series of health problems (one of them has seizures constantly, two of them have died already due to various diseases, and another one got hit by a car [not really a health problem but...]).

He was the runt of the litter and has out healthed (it's a word now...) and outlived all his brothers and sisters (and is the largest of the group). Hopefully he'll keep up that trend...
