Im sure someone remembers my post about my brother's dog having puppies. Well there were 9, they 5 and a half wks old, most have homes with close friends and family. (we're taking one) I got there to visit our puppy just as my brother got home to find a listless, but awake bloody pup. The piebald twin to our boy. Haider. Rushed him to the vet, never driven so nutty in my life. Vet said there was some sort of blunt trauma causing a skull fracture. He had to be euthanized. This was yesterday. We got back to his house and tried to find the cause. I asked the vet what could have caused it, dog? falling off something? of course she couldnt tell us anything about what could have happened. There are 8 puppies left to keep safe, and the only conclusion we could come to was he escaped, and fell. but the height he would have fallen from is no higher than him if he were standing on his hind legs. Two puppies escaped, him and ours. Our boy was just fine. We couldnt find anything that would have fallen on him. Could a fall cause this terrible disaster? they are no longer in the pen, they have been put in a kennel, just in case, the only reason they werent in the kennel is because they have a large dog that needs it or he pees in the house. They are just gonna deal with that til the puppies are gone i guess. I just dont see a fall from that height causing it, but i guess its more likely than my brother hitting him with the door on his way in (thats where he was found and thats what my brother thought happened. He was a wreck until we found blood by the pen, thinking he killed that boy. But, we need to figured out what could have happened so it won't happen again. This was the most terrible freak accident that i've witnessed with animals, and i've seen some pretty hard stuff. I will never ever get rid of the picture that poor puppy left in my mind. But I suppose that's a good thing.

Were there any children (or anyone really, though I hope and adult would have done something for the pup) in the house that could have accidentally stepped on or dropped him? Is it possible their large dog caused the damage? I don't know if a short fall could have caused that much damage, I don't have experience with young pups and I don't know how delicate they are. I'm sorry you and your brother had to go through this and I'm sorry for the poor pup, I hope the rest stay safe and sound.

That sounds more likely than falling from a few inches of height. No, I don't think falling off of something would do that kind of damage...unless it was from way high up. But a door.....if it smacked him hard enough might. Could the mother dog have picked him up and slammed him against the floor or wall, from shaking him? Sometimes mother dogs kill a baby if they think something is wrong with them. (instinct) I think that's pretty rare though. So, the closest thing I can think of as a possibility would be the door opening really hard and fast against his head.

At any rate, what a horrible accident. I hope your brother doesn't beat himself up over this. Accidents happen. Hope there is a place for the pups now, where they can't escape. The best thing is to try and move on and take care of the rest of the pups. Dwelling on this for too long will take your energies away from the other dogs and serve only to make you all feel awful. There's nothing you can do about it now....by knowing what happened, other than make sure they're in a protective area. I'm glad they all have good homes they'll be going to when they're old enough.

Yea he would have had to wail the pup though, hard. these are big, strong pups. It definetley wasnt the door though, we found blood right outside of the pen, which must be where it happened. Then I guess sadie brought him to the door. I dont know, I guess you're right, what's done is done. We drove hour and a half yesterday to bury him at the farm. Our grandparents are buried there, his momma was raised there, and one of his sisters will be too. Figured that was a good spot. It's heartbreaking he never got a chance to live. He was the biggest sweetheart of the litter, so laid back since the day he was born. I know about mommas killing their babies at times. Happened to a kitten in a litter in a house we just moved into. It was a runt, we were syring feeding it. she ended up eating everything but its head. Quite a thing to discover at 9 yrs old. But this pup was healthy. He was the biggest of them all. If only dogs could speak, I guess, that's the only way to know what happened. Because they know.

You said they escaped.
Do you think someone may have tossed them back over the fence and that one landed on his head?
Maybe I mis-read. I thought you said they'd escaped.

No, the pen they escaped from was a pen put together inside (living room) to keep them at bay when they needed to be. We've all pretty much come to term with the fact that we'll probably never know what happened.
