Did you know that a Dobe will loose points in a AKC show for UN croped ears? I didnt know that. The standard says
Ears normally cropped and carried erect. The upper attachment of the ear, when held erect, is on a level with the top of the skull.
.

I take that to mean the expect them to be croped. I know they could still win with uncroped ears, since its a overall point system. But, hmmm learn something new everyday.

I prefer dobes, danes, boxers, dogos, canary dogs, mastinos, corsos, and pits with cropped ears.

I think dobes look funny with natural ears, lol.

I would not call it "losing points".

There have been quite a few AKC CH natural eared dobes.

However, this is something that is impossible to miss. If a dog with natural ears is to finish, generally it must be of a better quality than a crop eared dog that could finish.

It would likely take more time as well, since you would probably have to shop for judges that consider the entire dog, and not just the ear.

actually, there have only been three to this day in time. there are two other natural eared dogs right now that have points on them, and there have been some in the past. but to date, there are only three dogs (two of whom are still alive) that have obtained AKC CH's with natural ears.

I don't like Dobies with uncropped ears, it doesn't make them look fierce and regal it makes them look goofy.

Doberkim, wow, I thought there had been more than that.

I remember one black/rust bitch several years back.

i LOVE uncropped ears on any dog, perhaps its the british blood in my veins...(ear cropping is totally illegal in the uk and tail docking can only be done on feild dogs and showring dogs.)

Cropping or uncropping really depends on the bloodlines, my male is fully registered, and has an awesome bloodline, his ears are uncut, and he almost makes them stand up. My female is a rescue shelter dog, and I wish her ears were cut, she didn't come from as nice a background, and she does look a little goofy, but I wouldn't trade either for anything in the world. :)

your dobes are gorgeous, the females ears look lower set than the males, and longer. i think both are gorgeous with their natural ears, she also has a very feminine slender look to her face...
i also think the natural ears make them look forever young

Im a fan of croped ears.

I think it makes a dog look kind of dorky and to me a Dobe is suposed to look itelegent, and "mean"

Doesnt meen that a uncroped dog is stupid, or not protective.

You guys know what I meen.

VS6Dobie - nice Boy. Do you have a standing to the side pic of him?

If anyone wants a guard dog, then they should crop the ears. Dogs with cropped ears are more detering to the bad guys.

my personal thought on ear cropping, go have the edge of your ear shaved off, literally go have your ears cropped, once you have been through that pain (and belive me it HURTS from the "cropping" through the burning sting of the healing process (i had it done to one ear due to a small tumor) once you have sat through that pain, then if you want to do it to your dog, go ahead...

im one of those very strange people that if i wouldnt want it done to me im not gonna do it to the dog.

my only exceptions is for actual working dogs. if you have a working spaniel whos tail should be docked due to the lieklyhood of a break while working then get the tail docked...
if the dog is being used for hunting/working purposes and the ears should be cropped for saftey to the dog (it hurts more to have the ear torn off than it does to have it cropped) then im all for that too...
and only if you absolutly HAVE to for the show ring (though i have now noticed a trend as the european mindset is comming over that the judges are finally accepting natural eard dogs...)
however if the sole purpose of having the dog cosmetically altered is so itll look more "frightening" or "prettier" then go have the procedure done to yourself...see how it feels then if your still sure your dog wont hurt after it or wont mind the tape...go ahead...

stepping off the soap box now...
ALL OPINIONS ARE THOSE OF THE WRITER...you dont have to agree with them, just acept them as the thought of someone who is anti cropping/docking unless for purpose. and understand that thereare MANY people in this world who feel the same way...

personally as i said before i think the short cropped ears of a breed like a dogo (still used for its origional purpse where it came from) looks stunning but it is also for a reason...
those long pointy ears for a dane or a dobe or whatever other breeds...would NEVER have been done in the day....all of them would have short cropps as cropping the ears was to protect the dog from having them torn off by the animals it was hunting...

He's 2 years old, I've got all his paperwork, but I'm not very knowledgeable on how to enterprit it all. I have a certified pedigree from AKC on him. However my breeder put a limited registration on him, so that no one compete's with her breeding service. She has stock from all over the US and some traces back from Germany. All her dogs are beautiful.
