Personally, I prefer the natural look. I think the dogs should be judged for the way they look naturally. In the case of the dog getting hurt however, then yes I would dock and crop. Again, this is just IMO.

Doberkim, wow, I thought there had been more than that.

I remember one black/rust bitch several years back.
you may be remembering dogs that have shown and gotten some points, and i do know more hve finished in canada, but there hasnt been a natural eared bitch to finish in the US.

currently there are some showing (one with points has natural ears due to a damaged ear when she was a puppy, she was never cropped) who is BEAUTIFUL.

wdobbie - your female actually has much more correct natural ears than vladimir - though he is adorable :)

my take on what a proper ear set for a doberman should be with natural ears:

though bowie reminds everyone he can do upright too

I feel that it shouldn't make a difference within the AKC whether the dogs ears are cropped or not as it is mearly considered as a cosmetic enhancement in the apperance of the dog.

The main purpose of the ears being cropped was so that those that the dogs were fighting off muggers (when the dog was used to protect it's creator the german tax collector etc), they could not really grab hold of anything on the dog which gave the dog the advantage and i think the same applied to it's tail.

I don't mind the cropped tail but to be honest i prefer the doberman like other breeds who have cropped ears to not be cropped. At the end of the day i feel that it is really a matter of preference.

Doberkim, if you look at the second picture, his ears are closer to your "ideal pose" than the first picture, which is normally how he keeps them. His look odd in the first picture, because, when I took the picture, he had his head down, and I whistled for him, so he had a startled look.

I agree. It does all come down to personal preference and they should be judged as a whole not just one particular part of the dog. I prefer cropped ears but some people don't want to put their dog through "pain". The cropped ears gives the Doberman an intimidating, fierce look, whereas the uncropped gives them a goofy playful look. Cropping still does serve a purpose. Imagine if you had a big mass of cartilage hanging over you ears, your hearing would change imensly. Same with dogs, it allows them to hear better for intruders. I love the way my dog looks with his ears cropped, and I will crop all doberman's I get just because of personal preference.

I prefer the cropped look also, and if it weren't for the expense I would have done it on my male, my female we rescued when she was 3 years or so old, so it wasn't even an option. My next Dobe will be cropped and docked. I just enjoy my dogs, it really doesn't matter to me one way or another.

Who was his breeder?
some asshole who cared very little about what a doberman should be - structure, health, temperament and working ability. some schmuck who sold him to an inappropriate home and cared very little about what a breeder SHOULD be. someone who has NO IDEA (and probably doesnt care) where he is now.

i have no breeder on record for bowie - hes a rescue and competes on an ILP. i have a pretty good idea, though.

its not the ear flipped over - its more that he has rose ears, which are what you would see in iggies. the problem is the breed doesnt really have standardized natural ears, at least not in the US - you have prick ears, rose ears, tulip ears, etc ---
