Someone also told me to chain him up outside away from everything so he wont get the chance to even think of digging/ripping clothes down- My neighbor told me that and he said that his dogs did that when they were young and now there older they dont do that stuff anymore, there not chained up now.
I find that horrible, a puppy is most boistrous and very playful in its young life. You cant take that away because of natural behviour!

Hmmm. I was just thinking that he might do well with a puzzle toy. That would be something for him to focus on. And if you use a kong (which are great) freeze them and they will last SO much longer.

Hello, I have a 20 week puppy who is getting into everything and I need help-

Frist thing how do I get him to Stop digging holes? He keeps digging holes all over my lawn and its getting on my nerves to say the least, I cant tell you how many times I have Covered up the hole with dirt, I have even tried "Hartz-Stay away spray" that didnt work I have tried "Grants-No Dig Here Salt-Forulma" and nothing works, he keeps digging up my lawn. I need that to stop!

Another Problem-
He wont stop tearing down my clothes when I hang them outside to dry, For instance the other day I had washed about 10 towels and When I was hanging them he didnt pay no attention to them about a half hour later I came back out side and they were all in the dirt, and Its not like he plays with,he just tears them down and then goes after the next one, How do I get that to stop?

Someone please hlep me, I am really loseing it here!!!
Thanks in advance for any help.
Some dogs are diggers by nature, like Terriers and others do it for boredom. The clothes move the dog so it cannot reach the clothes. Try more toys to entertain him when he is outside. Perhaps a run or trolly line so he can run. A kong, stuffed with peanut butter, a big ball to play with. TOys toys and more toys.

Hi, I know exactly what you're going through! I have two nine month old pups, that I've had since they were seven weeks old LOL. Your baby is doing what puppies do; he's playing a game. That's all puppies do, really....play, Play, PLAY!!!

Taking away his toys is not going to help; it's going to make your problem worse. Without toys to entertain him, he's going to get into trouble.

I liked the suggestion of training with him when your clothes are drying. My pups would do the same thing with clothes on a line LOL.

I really do not like the idea of leaving a puppy out side alone all day....He should really be in a puppy proofed room, with his toys, bed, etc, when you aren't home with him.

Tieing him up is not going to fix anything. It'll only turn him into a barker, he'll keep digging up any part of your lawn he can reach, and puppies are far too energetic and playful to be kept on a chain.

If you have the time and patience for this baby, keep at it; you will never regret it! If not, re-homing him might be best for him. As his owner, it's up to you to make the decisions that will be best for him.

Looking forward to hearing more about your baby!!!!

Chaining a dog up will also tend to make them aggressive. They are defensless and they know it and they're in their fight or flight drive much of the time they're tied. Since flight isn't an option, that puts them into fight drive. It's a sad way for a dog to spend his time. If you feel that is your only option, you should probably consider finding him a new home.

Hate to be the odd man out but my puppy goes on a tie-out for short periods of time and she is fine. I can see her from my front door so she is not unsupervised. I don't have a fenced yard, can't have a fenced yard and I'm not going to take the chance of her running away and getting killed.
My last dog used a tie out too and it didn't make him agressive. All depends on how you use it, I guess. Tied up and alone all day....NO.

I think if you can't have a fence for some reason it would be much better to have a dog run. But if you have to tie them up for short terms you really need to supervise. They are vulnerable to the elements, predators, choking themselves... and things we can't even imagine!

Yes Saje. They are very vulnerable. They cannot move around freely and things can happen like you say. I never will think that it's OK to tie up a dog. For a very short time, fine. But for hours....absolutely not. It is not right IMO.

Even a dog in a fenced in yard can become agressive. The neighbors kids used to just torment my dogs way back when I had a fenced in yard. Lucky the little bleeps didn't get themselves bit.
No dog should be unsupervised and left alone in any situation for any great length of time!

Yes, but that was due to being tormented by those brats. The dog was still able to get away. A dog who's tied up really feels helpless and unable to get away if they think something might happen to them. This is the difference.

That is true though, that any dog can become aggressive. There are many causes for that and different types of aggression and a lot of that isn't even real aggression at all. It's an over used term IMO. I was talking about a defense "aggression" situation by forcing a dog into his fight drive instinct by removing the flight option out of the eqation.

Have you made him a place where he can dig?

Maybe take him to a beach or somewhere where he can dig on his walks.

Is it really hot outside where you live? He may be digging these holes to cool himself off, that is what Gunnar does. If it is hot maybe provided him with a kiddie pool that he can lie down in and cool off. Otherwise you are pretty much outta options besides staying out with him and correcting him immediately when he starts to dig, show him what he can do instead and praise lavishly. You could also build a kennel for him if you prefer him outside. Put cement as the base, then he could't dig.
Digging is a big part of some dogs lives. He may also be digging because of boardom...in that case he may rather perfer to be with you inside, at least there is more activity going on inside the house for him to be around.

Well you'll have to let us know what you figure out or decide to do about the digging problem. Good info to have for future posters with the same problems. Katya always used to dig holes so we started sprinkling cayenne pepper in the hole, she would leave the holes she'd dug before alone but try to dig new ones. It became a matter of watching her like a hawk and whenever she dug we brought her straight into the house, giving her a correction and then "banishing" her for a few minutes.
