Both of these procedures are legal in the united states. Do you think they should be outlawed? Many people think it is cruel, what do you think?

I feel the same way. I cant beleive that there are so many people who claim that it is humane. There is a city where a judge has the right to make an owner debark their dog if he gets complaints about their dog being too loud, how sad is that!

I'm very much against both, where i'm from (holland) it's illigal to get it done.

I think it's putting your pet through a lot of pain for your own convenience. When you take in a dog or cat you KNOW they are going to bark, and you KNOW they are going to scratch stuff. Spend some extra time training them not to, or learn how to live with it, that's just my oppinion. I have three cats that have completely destroyed the stairs in my brand new home, but i will NOT declaw them, neither would I ever consider debarking my dog.

I dont know if it should be made illigal. Over here in the USA/Canada people are so used to using it as a solution that it makes me think that they might find " other" ways of doing it, or going to a vet that will do it even tho it's against the law, and then it would get done very unprofessionally and cause the dog or cat even more harm...
I do think vets should advice against it and explain to people what it actually does to your pet.

Who knows...

I'm just curious are you in some kind of statistics or psychology class? Is that why are a lot of your threads are like this? Not that I mind having my brain picked and stating my ground on issues but the thought did occur to me that maybe this is some kind of a class project. :D

The threads I'm talking about:
Docking and cropping
Same Sex Marriage
Death Penalty
The Truth to the Pit Bull Problem
Human Lives are more impotant than any pit bulls life
Pit Bull Statistics

See why I wonder?

Oh yeah, SummerRiot made a debarking thread yesterday in General Dog Chat, and femke started a declawing thread in the Cat and Pet Forum on the 15th.

I dont think de-barking is unhumane at all. if it needs to be done, then it should get done.

I know a kennel where its breeding and kennel lisence were under review because of noise complains by neighbours so all of the breeder bitches and dogs had to be debarked.

I am against both surgeries. How would you feel if you couldn't speak? Or part of your fingers where gone? I think it's cruel and if you take the time, you can train your dog not to bark so much and your cat not to scratch the couch.

I would prefer not to debark my dog, but after I had exhausted all humane means of training him, if it came down to either I had to debark or rehome, I'd debark him. He is an indoor dog, he doesn't live in a pack where he would need his voice to be heard, and he would still be able to vocalize without recieving punishment. I think those of you who are so strongly against it, know very little about it.

I am very strongly against declawing. To declaw a cat is taking away its primary defense. Cats use their claws not only to defend themselves, but to hunt and play as well. It's like cutting off their fingertips. I personally just keep my cat's claws trimmed and filed down. They are never sharp enough to hurt the furniture, but my cat can still hunt and can still defend himself if necessary. If that isn't even enough, they have 'soft claws' things that can be applied to the nails of indoor cats.

I never really understood the process of having the dew-claws removed. I'd rather not speak out either, as I've never witnessed or heard of this. I have seen pups with their dewclaws removed, but thats it.

(Or are you talking about de-clawing cats?)

It would be fingernails, not fingers. I'd do it if they did, is there a place where they do that?

I'm not against either, like if someone wants to do it, go ahead. I dunno, I kinda like my dog's bark... and I think I'll keep the claws, they've never been a bother

Well this is the first time I've ever heard of debarking. I would never get that done, I find you can usually get most dogs to quiet down if they start barking.

Declawing is one thing I don't like to talk about much because my cat is declawed, and everyone then seems to think I'm an evil person who doesn't love my cat. Is it something I would ever have done again in the future? Probably not because the claws don't bug me much...except when you have a super playful kitty who digs them into your arms. >.<

I don't see that much of a problem with declawing only because it seems that all people say about declawed cats is a lie or completely over exaggerated. Just like anyhting else it should be a last option. If it lets them keep their home then I don't see the problem. I have had declawed cats and never once was one of them in pain or crazy etc. Just like any other surgery on animals you have to find a competent vet. Sure tehy are screwed on going outside but my cats wouldn't last outside with their claws :p !

If you've seen a declaw procedure, you will know that when a cat is declawed, its claw is not just removed. The entire claw digit (think of it as the third digit on your finger.) is removed.
