I couldn't imagine living in a society where inmates on death row were tortured, or given the same punishment they doled out. Imagine the mental state of the executioner who has to torture/give the same punishment back to a canibal? No big deal, just going to eat this criminal one body part at a time. That's not going to cause mental issues or anything.

I think the death penalty is, in general, barbaric and a waste of money... And an easy way out for criminals. Life in prison would be much more of a punishment for me than death.

Mostly this.

I cannot comprehend living in a country where execution is an available punishment. I just...no. Does not compute.

If we in supposedly civilized societies put half as many resources in to preventing poverty, into education and into early intervention problems as we do into policing and punishing...

I've been reading this for the past couple days... and just... wow.

How can we expect to better our society (and in turn REDUCE murders) if we can't better ourselves? Why do we expect human beings to rise above barbaric violence if society is sinking to the same **** level?

I'm not saying murderers should get off with a slap on the wrist but jeez, show some compassion. Be the change you want to see in the world.

If we in supposedly civilized societies put half as many resources in to preventing poverty, into education and into early intervention problems as we do into policing and punishing...

Hinckley DID attempt to assassinate the PRESIDENT, but that's okay because he failed? Yeah, he got off on the insanity plea, so don't make it sound like he was innocent of ANY wrongdoing. He is mentally ill, and now he's being let out with his lawyers pushing for eventual complete release. Can YOU guarantee he won't go off the deep end again and attempt, and maybe this time succeed, at killing someone? GPS monitored? Yeah, that's a big help if he's committing a crime.

On Chapman - there's NO doubt he murdered John Lennon. WHY is he even up for parole?
For one reason or another, we do have separate crimes, murder and attempted murder. I don't think there is a state anywhere that has death sentence for that. Life sentences aren't even that common.

Everyone comes up for parole because prison isn't only about punishing people. Its about keeping people safe, if you can prove you're not a menace, why keep paying for them them in jail?

I don't understand what that has to do with anything if they were over turned/exonerated.
Really? You don't understand what evidence that innocent people have been convicted and sentenced to death has to do with a discussion about the death penalty?

Your bitching about two innocent people out of how many?
Is this for real? Are you kidding me? It's... ok that two innocent people were put to death? And wrong to "bitch" about it?

okay, uhm here goes
I support the death penalty for certain cases, but especially child molesters and violent sex offenders. suicide rates are higher among their victims than any other crime victim, as far as i am concerned they killed those people they just did it slower. also amongst sex offenders the recidivism rate is so high as to functionally be 100%. so as long as they are wasting air they are a threat to our society and worse our members of society who are least able to defend themselves. i actually am willing to consider more leeway with murderers than sex offenders.
if you catch a dog killing your sheep you kill it. if you catch a bear killing your cattle, you kill it. if you catch a mt lion killing your horses you kill it. all predators. it's in their nature to be predators. if you move them from your ranch to somewhere else they just become predators on someone elses stock. they won't stop being predators. it would be nice if they would stop but they won't so you end the problem permanently.
sex offenders are predators. they won't stop being predators. if you move them from general society to another enclosed society and they have the physical capacity to do so they simply continue to be predators. what they do negatively impacts society on a great scale and with an enduring impact. the simple answer is to just end the problem.
i don't want to execute them for vengeance. i want to execute them because they will never not be a threat. they will always be a problem unless you make them not a problem. I don't care if they are mentally ill, it doesn't make them less of a threat. in fact it would be saving them from mental anguish that comes from their illness.
i am okay with having extremely high standards of evidence for what merits the death penalty (especially with murder). i think a bigger issue with false convictions lies with willful misconduct as regards the rules of evidence. too many prosecutors withholding exculpatory evidence. i think they need to do some time instead of just being fired.
i also don't think the death penalty needs to be particularly brutal and certainly not torture. however i think certain simple methods considered inhumane should be reconsidered. rope and a guillotine can be reused, are extremely effective and easier to get right than testing new drugs.
i understand not everyone will agree but that is how i feel about it.
i also feel the "country club/criminal college" atmosphere in prisons needs to go away. first get rid of the exercise equipment. then limit the diet and exercise so they CAN"T become huge killing machines. by the time they leave prison they should be more frail than an elderly man (or woman).
and i agree completely with decriminalizing drugs. it is a huge waste of money.
however i also feel we need to demilitarize our law enforcement. kick them out of the patrol cars and get them on the beat back in the neighborhood. that way they actually know people, treat them like human beings and prevent some people from becoming criminals in the first place.
