Cropping ears?????

You need to find a cropper who knows how to crop-they should be experienced enough to know what cut will fit the head properly etc-if not you will likely end up with a terrible crop and it would be better to jsut not crop at that point.

Cropping has next to no risk with it,they get pain meds for the pain they do have(or they should anyone-check into that!). I still don't see how people can say its cruel but put there dogs through spays. thats a life thretening painfull surgery.(and I'm not saying don't spay-just saying if your going to compare the two a spay isn't necessary eitheir-you cna keep your dog away from other etc.)

I think the main reason people approve of spays and don't approve of ear cropping is that the health benefits of cropping are generally negligible...

I think it is important to note that the American Animal Hospital Association, which has about 30,000 veterinarian members, has this position:
The AAHA encourages veterinarians to counsel and educate pet owners that [ear cropping and tail docking] should not be performed unless medically necessary, as well as encourages the elimination of these procedures from breed standards.

Vets also say to feed science diet and there are rules banning pits in some areas-it doens't mean its right.

I think we all know that some agree and some disagree about cropping. Can we please stick with the original question? :)

Actually, many good vets that are familiar with ear cropping and have done the procedure many, many times still require the client to bring in pictures of what they are looking for. There are "show crops" and "pet crops" so to speak. I think it's responsible of the vet to ask for pictures.

Back when I had my dane cropped, the vet we took him to is one of the only vets in Oregon that will crop and he is known EVERYWHERE for his experience and work. He wanted to go over pictures with me as well.

I also worked for a vet who would not dock tails unless the owners had marked the tail with a pen where they wanted it cut. The vet did not want to be held responsible later for not docking where the breed standard called for. She left it up to the owner to be responsible for length etc. She was just there for the medical procedure.

Ethics aside, I think it's important to stick to the original topic.

She just needs to go into it very carefully-it is a big decision.

Most of the time when someone comes onto the dobe forum looking for pics they end up with a dog with a bad crop and the vet having no clue to even post.

Its true they may jsut want her opinion on it but she really needs to be cautious about it. My cropper had a set of pics to look at.

There is nothing wrong with either docking or cropping so long as it is done by someone who knows what they are doing, not somoene in a dungy basement with a pair of rusty sheers or scissors. I actually prefer a good crop/dock on the appropriate breeds especially if they are working dogs.

We do the same things.

In fact, before any ear crop is even scheduled, the client must come in for a consultation WITH the dog & discuss in detail how he (owner) wants the dog's ears. At this time the vet can evaluate the ear set & state his/her opinion on how the crop should be done & whether or not the dog is even a good candidate. We strongly urge people to bring in pics, but if they don't, then the vet will break out his photo album of crops he's done on various breeds & have the owner browse to see if something strikes his fancy. There is no charge for this consultation as it is done mainly to protect the vet's ass....to put it nicely. However, this is when they leave $25 although that gets applied to the surgery when that day arrives.

As for tail docks, we require that the owner show us how much he wants left. However, for those that don't want anything left, to bad....we won't do it. My Rottweiler is one of those that literally has an indention vs. a nub & there is a very high risk of infection & other problems when you go up into the spine like that. And after the first puppy is done, we bring it out to show the owner to get their ok on it before we do the rest of them.

please ppl, this thread wasnt meant to turn into a debate
