Aidan's water bowl is made out of some kind of rock, it's a bit porous. It's quite gross. He only gets a little water at a time so the humidity doesn't get to high, and then crickets crawl in there and drown and the water dries up and they like, fry into the bowl. I can get them off okay but it smells pretty bad. Right now i'm just soaking it in warm water, i don't want to use bleach or anything, even though he doesn't drink out of it.

Soaking and a toothbrush should do it but for future reference regular cleaning might be a better idea, and cleaning out those crickets ASAP. What's the bowl for, just humidity? LOL, anyway good luck with that...blah

Go ahead and soak it in a bleach solution, you barely need any. About 1 tbsp to 1 gallon of water. It's better to make sure something like that is clean of any bacteria that have been breeding in the dead crickets etc. so that your lizard doesn't get sick.

Bleach isn't a bad thing if you use it in that concentration, and rinse the stuff off really well afterwards. Once bleach is mixed with water it tends to evaporate from the water itself really quickly anyway(like half an hour to an hour).

I guess i'll try bleaching it, then. I just want to make sure i can get all the bleach out...if not, i might just go buy him a metal dish.

The bowl is basically for humidity....i usually just end up misting him a few times a day and only fill it up when i'm not able to mist him, a day trip or something.

I use Nolvasan/Chlorhexidine to clean out my critters' cages and cage furniture. Haven't had any issues with it. I do know that it is safe to use bleach when diluted (although I forget at what ratio).

Why are you misting him or worried about humidity? Iggy doesn't have a water bowl in her tank at all. If they are getting a proper diet and soaked 2-3 a week there is no need for one.

Also....can you put the bowl in the dishwasher? This is typically what I do for Iggy's bowl and it always comes out clean other than the stains left from the colored food she gets. I don't have an issue with crickets - they are gone in a matter of seconds. She also gets worms and pinky mice tho.

Is Iggy a bearded dragon? Because i'd definately be giving her more water than soaking 2-3 times a week and what she gets in her food. Especially if she doesn't get greens? (i don't know if she does or not, you just didn't mention it so i'm not sure). Granted Aidan won't die of dehydration if that's all he gets for a few days, but he looks visibly healthier and happier when he's getting misted each day.

Yes, Iggy is a bearded dragon. She is 6 (almost 7) years old and eats a proper diet of greens/fruits/veggies with live prey 1-2 times a week (depending on what it is). She gets a soak 2-3 times a week for about 15-20 minutes. I have been doing this her entire life, along with a proper diet, and proper lighting and she is very healthy.

Bearded Dragons do not recognize standing water as water -- so they typically will not drink out of it. Misting is something that can be done, but it creates humidity in the tank which is something they don't need. Bearded Dragons are prone to upper respiratory infections when exposed to high humidity.
