Actually, many people argue about how canned food only diets are the best for cats, since they do not drink enough water. Many cats have kidney problems because of this, and eating canned food gives them their necessary intake of water.
Kibble doesn't really clean teeth... the problem is, tartar and plaque starts because of sugars and starches... which are found in low quality pet foods. Although, it is always good to brush your dog's teeth anyway and give them good chewies.
I eat hard things all of the time (like crackers) yet I still have to brush my teeth. I wish it were as easy as eating kibble to clean your teeth
Think of it like this, a dog on a raw diet has amazing teeth. This dog is not being fed any grains... most pets with bad teeth are fed low quality foods (like Pedigree, Fancy Feast), etc which causes plaque to build up.
