Well we talked to the vet and it is still in his colon. I think they are going to xray again tomorrow and see if it has moved. They said it is a slow process and it could take 5 days. If he sees that it is not moving he said they are going to load him up with liquids to put pressure on the colon to get it to move.

They said that with the digestive juices and everything mixing with the bone fragments that it is actually like a piece of cement in him. He said NO bones of any kind also. It was a raw bone I fed him and it was big I did not think all of those pieces would come off. He actually ate most of it but the regular bones I buy he just chews on them and eats the marrow. It is sounding like it is sepsis now I don't know if he means just in the colon I am so upset I can't follow all of this. He is on IV antibiotics, anti inflammatorys. something for nasea and mineral oil.

The first bit of bone (the smaller piece) seems to be out of him and behind that was a pocket of gas and all of that infection. So that had to get out so the bone in the colon can move. (HOPEFULLY) The colon surgery if it comes to that is dangerous because it is just cutting right in to the infection. He had two dogs that he performed it on and they lived but it was a very long hospital stay and a very long recovery at home. I just feel sick I can't believe this could happen so fast. It was Monday night that he ate the bone. This is killing me to be away from this dog. :( He has never been away from my side he follows me to every room. I can't stand him not being here.

I felt that way when Mary had to stay for her pancrititis a month or so ago. Sending all good energy your way that he can avoid the surgery.

Can you go visit him? It might be good for both of you. Maybe even take him a special toy he likes or just something that smells of you.

((HUGS)) Hang in here!!

Brody's face is so adorable. It's no wonder you miss it.

Please keep us posted. I still don't totally understand what kind of bone it was -- can you post a link? Has he had those bones before? It's very distressing. I know you want the best for your pup.

Sending good thoughts.

So distressing. I don't understand the physiology or chemistry of all of that calcium bonding together like concrete -- all I know is your baby is in pain and you are worried sick! We are sending good vibes...

It looks like one of the flat bones the two at the top and the one in the middle on the bottom. It is not one of the long bones. I think those are lamb and pork they also have a regular beef bone (whole knuckle this is what I usually get) and a bison bone. I got the split beef Knuckle bone because they were out of the regular ones. I am such an idiot to give it to him.

You can't blame yourself. Think of all the people out there who give their dogs cooked bones, or ice cream and chocolate, or let their dogs get over-fed and over-fat. So many beat and neglect and hurt dogs on purpose! You are an educated, well-meaning dog lover and you never would have intentionally done something to hurt Brody. There is no reason to beat yourself up for these freak circumstances. The important thing is that Brody get better, so try not to waste energy blaming yourself. You could never have known. Now he is getting care and we are all sending good thoughts your way...

I don't think I could go through what you are without trying to blame myself. I just hope that someone would try to smack some sense into me. You did not hurt Brody on purpose and you did not harm him intentionally. You didn't do anything stupid. It was an accident.

Don't blame yourself for this. To look after a dog and give it a good diet I believe raw bones shoudl be part of it.
Like Malmo said think of the idiots feeding cooked bones and chocolate.
Dogs are weird, my auntie had the same thing happen with her dog when she swallowed an entire corn cob!

Sending good vibes

I hope he passes everything and doesn't need surgery.

Your awesome for letting him stay at the vets and let them watch him for this stuff though! I work in a clinic, and you wouldn't believe the amount of owners who would rather put them down or take them home and then bring them back to avoid "boarding" costs...

Pet stores really shouldn't sell crap that is going to do serious damage do an animal.

Another reason why our dogs never get Greenies, any type of rawhide or nylabones.
They do get the beef marrow soup bones raw though and as soon as they have hollowed them out and ate the meat off of them, they get it taken away from them and into the garbage.

Hind Sight is only 20/20. How could you have known? You did nothing wrong. Some things just happen.

Hopes and Prayers for Brody for you! Hes in the best care as possible right now. It sounds like you have a great vet!
