Sorry its been a while guys, i started that new job and I have been extra busy. Something crazy happened though, I was laid off work (only after 1 week o_O, laid off not fired) and the very next day the puppies came.

I considered abortion, I set out to get it done. I couldn't find a vet in my area that would abort the puppies. They kept telling me, oh you cant spay a dog while its pregnant, and the one that does do abortions wouldnt do one because of how far along she was.

So I did go and get her xrayed. The new vet said that he believes the joint problem was from an accident she had earlier in her life, and that he did not believe it be heriditary. on the xray it showed what used to be a fractured elbow.

So Ive spent the last week or two working, and doing some research, as well as getting that xray done.

But anyway, the weird thing that happened is that i got laid off from my job.

The very next day fajita gave birth a week early! I had the vet on call just incase something awful happened, but thankfully she was a PRO. i mean these babies just came out so easily it was magical.

So now I have two precious precious chi's. Both seem to be healthy, the first born more healthy than the second though.

So I need tips. As of now I have them in her cage, with a light shining on top of the cage, and the cage wrapped in a blanket. I'm keeping the room very very warm. and its unfortunately very muggy in here lol. I feel like im in a sauna. i keep monitoring them to see when theyre eating. They arent eating as much as I would like for them to. which is why I am worried.

the second one born possibly is sick. I came in the room and fajita was trying to eat it. she had it by its umbellical cord flailing it around in the air. blood was everywhere, it was awful. I had to cut the umbelical cord because she would NOT turn lose of the baby. all the space i could cut it i used. so then the baby bled because it was too short. but it was either that or fajita was going to maul it.

the rest of the night she rejected the puppy nudging it away from her. i got it to feed, though, and since then she has decided to be nice to it. ( this all happened last night)

i tried contacting my vet today, and i did not get a returned phone call, and when i called back he was out of the office. So I am kind of on my own. it seems the veterinarian care in ohio is not that good.

So I need tips, how can i encourage the puppies to breastfeed?? I bought a puppy formula bottle and such, i guess i will have to supplement the feeding. any good recipes or should i just use the stuff i bought?

i have alot of free time now that i lost my job. so plz tell me anything i might need to watch out for.

also fajita is running a fever, is this normal?

after this is all done she is getting SPAYED. i will tell u that

Aww, good luck with that. I have never bred before so I would be useless. If she is running a fever I would take her to the vet ASAP. I really am clueless here, not sure if it is normal, but I would take her in if it were me.

Oh, and we need pictures of the puppies please!

As far as i know, taking Mother and pups should go to the vets within 24 hours even if you didn't see any problems.
So if you notice problems then you should phone the Vet ASAP to have all 3 of them checked over.

Agree with C+B ..... Mom should get a " clean out " shot and puppies should be checked within 24 hrs. If Mom rejected the pup, something must be wrong with it . Good luck !

Vet check within 24 hrs. and from what I've heard/read a temp of 72 (if I remember correctly) is good for newborn pups. I don't think it needs to be muggy and definitely not TOO hot! Check with your vet ASAP about everything...and post pics :)

I kept the whelping area a little cooler than most people . ( but Goldens aren't fragile pups ) If my Mom was uncomfortable and panting I knew it was too hot . You have to know the litter and go by that. Have you vetted yet ?? Anxious to hear update !

I would get mom and pups to the vet ASAP. The fever in mom needs to be checked out. Are you sure there are no more pups? Sometimes dogs stop labor and go on with life and there is still a pup inside:yikes:

The weaker pup should be watched very closley and they need to be latched on and feeding every two hours at least. You may have to assist this process. Also, the second puppy could be premature if the pups were conceived on different days. One day too early can lead to a premature puppy. The healthy pup may have been concieved a day or two earlier.

Also, since the one puppy had it's umbilical cord cut too close it may very well end up with an umbilical hernia. Cutting of the cord too close is what causes this.

Good luck to you, and I hope the pups make it.

Having a litter of puppies is not what its all cracked up to be. Sorry you had to find out. Make sure she doesnt have any pups left. Like Showpug said she could have stopped her labor and still has a pup inside. Could be dying and rotting and could compromise her life.
The worst was a bitch who didnt want to have much to do with her pups.
I had to convince her to lay with her pups long enough for them to really eat.
She wouldnt stimulate them to potty either so I was up every 2 hours someitmes sooner to do this. Needless to say that was her first and last litter. No reason to make a bitch be a mom if she doesnt want to be.

took fajita to the vet. no fever, got her oxytocin, vet said to just watch the puppies. so far they are doing well he didnt believe either of them were sick. I havent been able to weigh them cuz i dont have a scale, so i cant tell if theyre gaining much weight but the fat one is gaining ALOT of weight from what i can see. hes a MONSTER.

but then theres the runt... and he seems to barely have gained any weight. i've been supplimenting with goat milk today, as time goes on fajita seems less and less interested in her pups. i even had to make one of them pee earlier:-\.

every now and then one of them starts crying like really loud. but they stop when i move them towards her and put them on a nipple, or in the case earlier when i made him pee.

Is this normal? everytime they cry i Freak out and think theyre dieing or something.

I've lowered the temperature of the room, and i have a fan on, but im afraid the draft will kill the puppies or something. i dont know what temp the room is, but its comfortable room temp, probably a little muggy, and ive got the ceiling fan on...

fajita still seems dehydrated, she wont drink any water. but she will drink things mixed with water. i was giving her chicken broth milk and water the other day and she loved it, but it made her have diahrea.

today shes had goat milk, which includes 8 oz of water/serving and shes done pretty good drinking that, i'd say she's downed two and a half servings or more of it.

however she only would eat one meal today.

I've found an EXCELENT website that i've been using. it is http://www.clickersolutions.com/blog/blog02.htm
incase anyone wants to see it. but its got a great journal account of someone else raising pups. so thats generally what im going by. ive even
started them on the bio sensor program.

but like i said fajita is starting to lick them less, and pay less attention to them. how do i make them deficate???

i made heating pads out of rice and socks too, lol. this is such a great experience. but its already expensive and its timmmmeee consuming. i havent left them at ALL.

this is the last time i do this, but im glad god allowed me to take part in this beautiful thing.

Normally the mother would lick the anal area of the pups to promote deficating so if she is not doing that you need to get some clean cotton wool balls dip in warm water and gently massage the pups anal area once it has deficated the mum would normally eat this, so remove and clean up. Always using fresh clean cotton balls and water to prevent cross infection.

thanks moe i'll do that.

So the runt was kinda sickly when he was first born, but hes nursing to good health i would guess. hes doing fine i think. but so if i had to guess which one would be sick it would be him.

HOwever the fat one keeps crying. like and won't stop. I cant figure out what is wrong with him since he was born he was always the strongest one. he nurses VIGOROUSLY he twitches like crazy when sleeping, warm belly warm tongue im afraid something is wrong with him now, cuz he just keeps crawling around hte box letting lose this AWFUL cry.

I need to take them to the vet, but if its something i can do to help then i want to hold off for another week or so cuz they were just there the other day.

any ideas what could be disturbing him???

also if i feed them goats milk do i need to dilute it or can their stomachs handle it???

pups do twitch a lot in the early days similar to a newborn baby startling, this normally eases off after a while, the pups should be kept warm, normally after they have eaten they sleep, are they laying near each other? or are they spread out in the welping box? if a pup is to cold it will try to get warm by going nearer its siblings or mother, if too hot will move away to cool down, dont have anything directly on their skin that is too hot, thier skin is like paperthin and they can actually get scolded. have you tested the mothers teat to see if she is actually producing milk? its possible if she is not, although the bigger pup looks like it is feeding it may be getting frustrated as nothing is actually coming out? and maybe thats why its crying.
