Hello
I gave Brandi a little over three weeks to settle in and took her outside for her first obed. lesson. She is doing well but I am training opposite of her previous training (conformation) She wants to walk in front of me and she doesn't understand why I want her to stop and sit at the heel position. She does it but then jumps up and faces front standing looking at me.......OYE it'll come but it's gonna take lots of time and patience to keep her from reverting to what she has known for two years....... She did learn the word sit in that 10 minute session though so I know she's smart as a whip. We will work on 10 minute sessions for the next few weeks and I imagine she's gonna come along fine but this is the first dog I've had to re-train rather than just train......It's gonna be interesting.

I know a lot of people at my school, use different collars to help the dogs realize the difference between obedience and confirmation.

Most people where I go use a voldhard or a correction collar for obedience to start and their normal collar for confirmation. Once they realize the difference they just use the normal collar.

Oh yes, she needs to learn the difference. She has never had obed training and I use the same equipment for both now. But I use verbal commands rather than a physical change in equipment (what if I lose the correct collar or leash or have to replace it with something else) Lots of people want me to use the clicker for training, well you can't have a clicker in the show ring or Rally-O... When I want her to stand facing me for conformation I say "Come front" when I want her to be in the heel position I simply say "heel". When I want her to leave the heel position and walk with me, I simply say "walk". This is the easiest way to train obed for Rally-O and that's what I intend to do with her. Because of her hips and a propensity for hip displaysia she cannot perform agility or fly ball so I'm training with verbals which will take some time and I never never never stop training on a negative always on a positive. If she isn't getting something I do go back to something I know she understands and she is always treated and praised lavishly after each success. She is never scolded for not understanding a command because it's the fault of the trainer not the dog.......... When will people understand that!!!!!!! She always gets a good belly rub and lots of treats and love during and when she is finished with her training sessions.
