Does anyone know if the bones that are sold from places like Petco and Petsmart are safe for my Husky? I don't know the brands; I only know a place that carries some from Merrick. I was just checking if there's something to look for like compressed rawhides which are supposed to be safer.
I know bones from a butcher would probably be the best but I really only have access to regular supermarkets in my area and have not seen any bones there for sale. I am just looking for a little treat besides the Nylabones he has now.
Thanks for any info......

"Regular supermarkets" often have a meat section, and the meat section will have raw meaty bones, beef knuckles, or soup bones. Call and ask or stop by and they will show you.

Ohhhhh...... we get most of our boys bones and turkey necks from a pet store... it is the nature's variety brand. :)

Sorry, thought you meant the yummy smoked ones that our dogs salivate about every time we walk by...;)

I think the OP did mean the sterilized (smoked or unsmoked) bones in Petsmart. :)
Well, I'm obviously too blonde for this thread. :D

We buy hollow marrow bones from our local pet store and fill them with goodies, but I won't buy the smoked bones.. too risky for my boys. But it may not be for other dogs. :)

Hannah used to get the smoked bones that you are talking about and it gave her HORRIBLE gas! I mean open all the windows in the house type gas:lol-sign: ! Those don't last as long, IMO, as something like the marrow bones. Hannah has always managed to chew off a huge chunk and needed it thrown away in a matter of a day. She used to go through like 3-4 a week we figured she needed to realize that we're not made of money.

Forgive me, beforehand for not being well versed in what type of bone to give a dog, but is a "marrow bone" the same as a "femur bone"? And the butcher looked at me like I was from outerspace and had just landed in his shop when I asked for a couple of "raw meaty" bones the last time I was in the shop so I said forget it.

So, since I have a ditzy butcher and I know nothing about "raw bones" per se could someone give me a list of some types to ask for? I guess I should have just asked for a soup bone, then I HOPE that the butcher would know what THAT is. :D I guess one type of bone would be a beef knuckle bone?

They are terrible for your dog...... I bought one along time ago for my dog and he cracked a piece off . It was smoked and the piece was sharp that came off of it.
Yup that's the same thing that Hannah did! Hers was sharp as well. I think that is the last one that we bought for her too.

I'm not the most versed in this, either. We don't give them to Herschel because we don't want blood all over our carpet. :)

The Nature's Variety raw frozen bones are nice, but expensive.

Ask your butcher for a beef knuckle bone, or a beef knuckle cut in half. Femur bones are no good, as they are weight bearing and can break your dogs teeth. You could also ask for raw "soup bones", and any butcher worth his cleaver should be able to help you.

If they give you a funny look, tell them that it is for your dog.

The only 2 bones I bought at a pet store shattered too . Have never tried the frozen ones . I have some old marrow bones that are still of interest for short chews . As far as new ones, I let Ollie work on them outside or in the garage until meat and goo is off ...after a couple of days , they become inside bones.

i have yet to have a problem with smoked bones, sterilized bones, raw bones, or anything like that. Ruckus usually gets the smoked knuckles and i have found a sharp piece on one bone, out of about 7.
he has a big raw meaty bone in the freezer now. i know they are good for him but they sorta gross me out. and plus he cant have them in the house and we dont have a fenced in yard so he has to sit on his leash and eat on it. lol
sorry im rambling!

A one out of 7 chance of getting a sharp piece of bone stuck in your dog's digestive track is pretty bad odd's if you ask me....

I'm off to the grocery now,,,,, hope they have some good bones ! I know I can get short ribs, but don't like to take chances with them ....too small for large dogs .

That is what amazes me. I grew up in the days of small Butcher shops and you could get anything there. Today you walk into one of these supermarket butcher areas which are very large by comparison, , and ask them for a bone and their eyes glaze over like you a speaking a foreign language...

Yep.
And he looked like he was TWELVE! And to think, they even let him
have sharp objects to play with at work. :D
