Well I stopped by the petstore (pets plus) to purchase dog food and as always I check on all the puppies in the cages. This time they had a 7 month old yorkie female. I couldn't believe my eyes... They said her owner had a stroke and the family was going to sell her to a breeder as breeding stock, somehow the owner of this family owned pet store got his hands on her. Anyway, of course they asked me if I wanted to buy her, I said "how much", they said $500.00!!! I was like, I don't think so, there are over 400 yorkies in rescue on petfinder.com and I could save 2 for that price and they would come utd on shots and fixed. Needless to say, they just gave me a look... Oh, one more thing... they said we don't want to forget to mention she is AKC registered, I was like "so what's your point"? Thats only good if I really want to breed her, which of course I wouldn't.... I am so upset at these **** pet stores that just continue to sell these puppies. They had 3 shitzu's, 2 poodles, 1 boxer, 2 jack russells, 1 border collie, 1 westie, 1 pekepoo and this precious yorkie. 12 puppies and I guarantee they will sell them by christmas. Ugh!

I absolutely hate pet stores! I wish they were illegal. People go into those stores and they have no idea where those puppies came from. I dont purchase anything from pet shops including dog food, collars, or anything else they sell, because then I would be supporting their store and keeping them in business.

I hear ya!! There's a pet store in our mall that has more puppies then they can handle. 3 to 5 pups to a cage and these pups do not look well. They were sleeping in their poop, the poop was never cleaned up and the puppies were very skinny. I asked a person that worked there why the puppies were so skinny and she said its because they were puppies and they had wrinkly skin and they just needed to grow up and fill out.. which was odd because you could see their rib cages on some of them. The were also feeding and selling the lowest brand of dog food.. it started with a "P" and it wasnt Purina.. anyway, it was sad to see. Oh, and the prices were jacked up way up!

The last time I was at a pet store I seen a rottweiler pup that was so skinny and poorly bred that it looked like a doberman with a thick coat. I also hate it when they sell mutts for over a thousand dollars. someone would have to be pretty stupid to pay for those kinds of prices.

UGH I HATE pet shops. Whenever I see one I started burning inside.

Oooooh that ticks me off sooo much....border collies are NOT for everyone...that poor puppy will probably end up with an idiot who only gets it because it's cute. Grr...

I despise Pet stores, luckily I see VERY few Bernese Mtn dogs (my breed) and I have NEVER seen a Beauceron (my other breed) in them. I was able to go on a puppy mill raide with a Rottie Rescue, and that's where I got one of my Bernese. Bailey.

I don't like when the petstores sell the puppy's. Before I knew any better I fell in love with a rat terrier at a Petland store. They had two one had been there for a week or so and the other they had just gotten in. The one they just got in was peppy and jumpy and just a normal puppy but the other one (the one I was in love with) was very lathargic and probably sickly the more I think about it. They wanted $800 for her (which only included whatever shots she had at that time). Ofcourse we couldn't afford her so we applied for FINANCING and our credit's so crappy that we couldn't get her. Which is a good thing because we young boys they probably would have tortured the crap out of her and ending up breaking her paw or something she was so small.

the only thing pet stores have to comply to is that they keep it sanitary and they're up to date on shots. however they're not all inspected properly and there are ways around the shots being up to date if the purchaser is willing to take the risks. which they often are. i wish pet stores would have the info. on the sire and dam, have contact info. on the breeder, and also showcase pets from the pound. then maybe it wouldn't be so bad.

I hate petstores as well. They are always sleeping on poo. Some dogs look so sad. I just hate seeing older dogs still in the cage.

it's a really despicable business. :(

i urge everyone, write letters and have friends and family write letters as well, and let these businesses know you do not appreciate their supporting puppy mills. also, do not give them your business. let them know outright you won't spend any money at all at their store as long as they sell puppies and kittens.

i know for some people it's difficult to find a different place to buy supplies from, but i urge you to research alternatives.

if a pet store is in a mall, be sure to write letters not only to the business itself but also to the mall management.

the more these people hear from animal lovers, the more of a difference it is going to make. if they don't hear any complaints, they'll just continue.

Tell me about it. Lemon is one of the poor dogs from a pet store (long story). They have anything from 'Jack Pugs' to 'Bull bouviers'. Disgusting.

I used to go to this one petstore in PA all the time and we would get them to take one puppy out at a time and we would play with them. They must get lonely and bored in those little cages :(

As long as their are ignorant people who just think that they are getting a high quality puppy because they overspend on it I feel bad for those puppies. I'm just glad now that I did not get the financing for that poor pup, although I would have given her a good home I just know our home wouldn't be safe (with a pit mix at home and small children). I hear a commercial all the time on the radio and Petland advertise that they do such a wonderful job at matching pets with families. They didn't even care to inform us that the puppy we wanted probably wouldn't have been a wise choice being so small and us having rough children around they only care about money. I think that the petstore employees should be forced to watch those poor dogs get euthanized at the shelters when the people that bought the puppies realize that they are not the right puppy for them and turn them into the shelters.

I only know of one store where I'm at that's within a 30 minute drive that sells Innova. Unfortunately, they also sell puppies. I've been in there once and nearly got myself kicked out. I have such a guilt trip knowing that every bag of food I buy is more money to this place...but I'm not sure where else to buy and the S&H on buying food from the internet just scares me.

Case in point.... As I am now a pet sitter, I am going to start adding on to my business. I love the creepy, crawleys... snakes, reptiles, scorpions, tarantulas, hissing cockroaches and such... so I am going to do as much rescue as I can... some I may have to buy from the "leading" pet store...like the cockroaches, and tarantulas. Anyway, it's going to be an educational, "birthday theme." They hire me for an hour and I bring out the critters, and tell them why they are needed in our enviornment...
Anyway, I go to PetSmart today...ask the "fish" guy where are the reptiles and other critters. He says, "You have to go to PetCo for that, we don't believe in having animals here that eat other animals." Well, the smart ass I am, says, "Well, you sell salt water fish and fresh water fish, they eat living things. The dumb ass was silent for a moment, and said, "Hey, your right." Most of the critters PetSmart (which I am NOT endorsing) feeds mostly crickets. The snakes, yes, get mice. Then you have PetCO, with a HUGE tank of gold fish which are used for feeding other fish. Bottom line, it's a store, just like any other, they don't care for the most part, they just do their job. I also "screwed" with this guy, since I have a Beta fish, no you should not put another Beta in there with him, but YOU CAN have other docile fish in the same bowl. So, I ask, "Are you the fish PRO here"? He says yes, and I ask him what fish I could put with my beta..... he says NONE..... WRONG!
Then I see a "trainer" walking a 6 month old lab who has jumping issuses. The trainer was more into talking to people than training the dog.... I didn't say a word....but I wanted to. I just sit back...but it's still a sick joke.

They're the ones who told me about the place I go to now. The next closest one I'm not really sure where it's at, but it's an animal hospital and not a pet store, so it might be worth the effort. Unless they have the typical vet markup...I've been told recently that I'm not allowed to rack up more than 1 or 2 hours of overtime (versus the 5-10 I had been), so my checks are much smaller and thus so is my budget.

I will only shop PetSmart as they have no dogs, and the cats are in from the HS to be adopted.

They have dogs on Saturdays, but they're also from local HS and are up to be adopted. Very, very stringent adoption screening too. However, the best food my Petsmart sells is Royal Canin. Still much better than Iams or Science Diet, but I know I can afford a bit better than RC, so I'll buy something different. I just have to find somewhere else to shop.
