Have you tried everything else, first? (Weekly baths, or every two weeks.. removing carpets.. getting a GOOD vacuum/ionic breeze/anything else that will reduce the dust, dander, and hair.. locking them out of the bedrooms... etc?)

Please don't give up hope immediately.. it's very hard to rehome older cats. :(

Agreed. Rehoming an animal should be the LAST thing you do. Animals are not disposable, sometimes when you have a pet you need to make sacrifices. If your hubby has had allergies for awhile and just got around to getting an allergy test it must not be too terribly bad????

I have been allergic to my parents cats for years, and i just have to make do!!!

When I 1st moved back here it would cause me to wheeze, be breathless - asthmatic reaction - I was on antihistamines and a salbutumol inhalor.

It was a nightmare - but the cats going wasn't even a thought in anyone's head.

I have to say - 18 months down the line and these symptoms are no longer there.

Obviously if I have been touching their cats, I wash my hands - if I touched my face my eyes would swell up.

But I agree - if the allergies are BEYOND liveable, then rehoming may be the only option, but if they are liveable - just make sure you hoover regularly, don't let them in the bedroom and make sure hubby has little contact.

I wouldn't rehome a pet unless I had some kind of SERIOUS allergy which was making life a misery.

Obviously - it is YOUR choice and YOUR cats though - so do what you have to do, and do it well! :)

Hubby doesn't want to get rid of the cats any more than I do. We're going to try allergy shots and see if that helps. But if we can't manage it, we'll rehome the cats. Here's hoping that works.

Gem, years ago when I was 16 an allergist told me I was allergic to mold, certain pollens, ad nauseum, you know the drill . . . and dogs. Yah. Right. We'd just moved to Tennessee and suddenly I was allergic to dogs - having slept with a dog on my bed since before I turned 4 with never so much as a sniffle or an itch.

You see how that turned out ;)
